Strikemaster Solo Recoil Handle Modification

I’ve always liked the large recoil handle on the Eskimo Augers, it allows you to start the auger with Mittens on and I like to wear my Big Leather Choppers with wool inserts when it’s cold.

Since it was raining today the ice here is basically gone I started messing around in the garage. While doing that I noticed and old 2 gallon pump sprayer that was broken but I kept what was still good. When I saw that large handle the light bulb lit up and I grabbed it off the shelf. First to the chop saw to cut it off just below the handle, smooth it of on the grinder and drill a hole in the middle.

Here’s a few pictures of the before and after.

Looks good.. but I would be concerned about the durability of that plastic in extreme frigid temps where most lesser plastics shatter under load.

I wouldn’t be too concerned. It’s not your auger!

Do you know for a fact he used a “lesser plastic”?

    If you do…………………prove it!

The plastic is very heavy, the recoil takes very little to pull it over. The only concern I have is if I drilled too much out for the cord to recess into the handle and it pulls through. If it does I will put a larger washer on it and keep it up inside the handle loop.

Nutz since the handle used is from a yard sprayer, I would have a concern about it breaking in cold weather as well. If it would, it would end the hole cutting trip for the day.

By placing a good size metal washer between the knot and the motor, that should keep the cord from retracting into the recoil right?

I think SM should take a serious look at your modification. After all, they are used when people are bulked up on clothing.

Did the same thing, I used the handle off a old snow shovel.
Did that about 8 years ago, still works.

    BK,

I have a spare recoil that I carry with me in my shck, you never know when you might need one!!! I did put a small Washer inside but I’m leaning toward the idea of a larger waher and leaving the knot stick out.

How much weight does that add to the auger?
