This Iowa guy is looking to see how far into Minn. I have to drive to find good ice. (for me that is at least 4 inches) Your locations and ice thickness are greatly appreciated…signed, NO ICE IN IOWA

It’s looking like Mille Lacs area is your only shot…

well, that is a 5-6 hr drive from my location, never fished it before and unfortunately my normal fishing buddy is tied up between xmas and new years when I have the time to come that way, hoping to find something closer to the border
but will keep that in mind! thanks!

So I am guessing that Clear Lake and Spirit Lake in IOWA are no good either then?

From what I know, spirit started to ice over in the bays and then was supposed to open up with the warmer weather we have. Clear Lake was supposed to be wide open, but I cant confirm. I am just north of waterloo/cedar falls, and their is only a skimming on the ponds that would have went away today.

I live by Mankato and there was nothing even close to being fishable around home. I headed north on Thursday and I did not pass a single lake south of Brainerd that did not have open water. That being said good luck! The Mille Lacs area and west should be fine. 8″ for all the ice I checked just south of Leech.

you might have better luck going a little north west up by webster, south dakota, as they have fishable ice.

I was on Mille Lacs yesterday… 1″ – 3″ of soft ice on the main lake. A bit more in the bays. My advice? Keep heading further north. At least until some of the cold weather forecast for the coming week has an impact.

Seen a guy ice fishing lake Como in st paul on friday. Sure hope he was wearing his water wings. For southern mn just hook up the boat and head to redwing. Sounds like the bite is going pretty well down there. Would bet you could even jig over the side of the boat with the short rods and catch fish.
