Are You Using Plastics for Crappies Yet?

Wondering how many of our anglers are utilizing the wide variety of panfish plastics/trailers these days. Yesterday, we didn’t bring ANY meat with us and used JUST our assortment of plastic trailers. I believe the straight plastic trailer better imitates food sources big crappies are feeding on.

How many guys are using plastic trailers for panfish?

Not only crappies but also gills, bass, and jumbo perch. There are a few tough days each Winter where friends will out fish my plastics tipping with spikes or waxies, but usually only in numbers, the size advantage still seems to favor plastics.
If you give plastics a serious try and pay close attention to maximizing lure action and minimizing lure spin you will soon reap the benefits.

99% plastics and hair year round for the past 8 years or so. It really is priceless when you can outfish 5 or 6 bait guys fishing in the same group. I also use a bunch of small spoons fished bare or with plastic tipping them. Smaller isnt always better when every other angler around you thinks small.

Do you tend to jig constantly when using the plastics. I’ve only used live bait ice fishing. the plastics would be nice compared to trying to keep minnows and worms alive. and then I wouldn’t end up with a pocket full of dust from the waxworm containers

Most of the time yes but some days they want it as still as possible. Those days i will just set the rod down on the ice and watch the locator and rod tip.

I use plastics probably 99% of the time. The only time I dont always use plastics is dead sticking a minnow under a float, tip ups, and tipping spoons

I haven’t tried the just plastics. what would you recommend for a setup on a greenish dirtier lake going for crappies.

Used to be 100% bait, now all I use is plastics. Bro bug jigheads and nuggies-can never go wrong, especially in deep water for crappies. Only use bait on my tip downs, and sometimes if its windy plastics on those work even better than anything else!
