I used a snap lock all summer for jigging and didn’t seem to notice any negative effects. Do you guys tie directly to your jig or spoon or use a snap lock or swivel with lighter ice fishing gear?

I fish a lot of weedy lakes and the snap collects weeds to bad so i tie direct in most cases..

I use snaps on spoons and tie directly to jigs. When I use blade baits or lipless cranks I use a snap and I usually tie a swivel 2′ from the snap.

I almost always tie direct. I go with the lightest line possible and retie often as I change presentations to find what is working best. I have more faith in a fresh knot, than something that has been tied to a snap or a swivel for long periods of time with multiple hook changes.

I usually do keep one rod with a swivel on for some of my bigger spoons when I try to catch some pike. Keeps the line twists down and gives you an extra inch of protection on the line from those sharp teeth.

For walleye I use snap lock for both hard and soft water and tie for pan fish. I like snaps for quick lure change , especially on ice. Never noticed any problems.

I use the quick clips for lures that can hang vertical, such as Cecils, Rockers, Purists, and of course Rembrandts have to use a clip with Rembrandts because they would cut a knot. Jigs that need to be held horizontal get a tight Palomar knot.

JohnnyG105, ecnook recognizes them as would any Mississippi or Wisconsin River backwater rat. I also learned that a quick clip will help stop a lure from spinning too. Take a Rocker, (my no.1 go to lure), and tie it direct and if the line ends up off from top dead center by the slightest fraction you can develop spin while jigging. A quick clip or a loop knot mimimizes or eliminates that. The quick clip allows for a quicker lure change though.

Another question, when I tie direct is one knot better than another? I’m used to the palomar knot and I can tie it tightly and quickly. Does it just come down to personal preference?

I like a Palomar because the line is doubled going thru the eye. With 1# and 2# and Guterman mono sewing thread the doubling provides a greater load bearing area. However I use the Uni knot a lot also and it is great for tying line to line.

The palomar is simple and quick with cold hands as well.
