Early ice: Think light

When anglers are hitting the early ice, mobility is key. I do my very best to have the gear I need packed as efficiently as possible.

Spud bar or hand auger. (Yes we all love our power augers!! I’ll be ripping up ice with my new Honda Strikemaster in a couple weeks.) Right now though, an 8-inch StrikeMaster hand auger is perfect

A StrikeMaster Bait Puck 2 is great for your minnows.

Grab a backpack and throw in your MarCum, scoop, tackle, camera, knee pad, bait puck. I even have my ice rods hanging out the top.

Sometimes, you fish outside the house on evening runs and a simple backpack can save you a serious hassle and keep one hand free.

It’s ON here at Rainy Lake boys!!.

Good idea on the bait puck for minnows. Used to put a few in a zip lock bag for hole hopping but they would only last maybe a hour or two in there.

Out of curiosity how does the bait water regulations change for winter in MN? Could someone get a ticket for the water in the bait puck?

Not sure. My water from home that never exchanges with Lake water. Plus they would have to frisk me. LOL!!

In WI the real issue in their (WDNR) eyes is changing lake water with different lake water. I’m betting that Chris never changes lakes, therefore should never be contaminating the Rainy Lake water with any other water…
