OTTER HARD ROD CASES

I believe this was discussed before, however i am wondering if the reel handles need to be broke down on your ice combo’s for the cases to close?

Has anyone had experience with the clam case and if so, do the handles have to be broke down on those as well?

    Any input would be great?

I don’t fold mine down in the otter – however, I have broke one reel doing this. I believe it was rather cold out and I was being impatient with putting them away.

I have never broke them down before and don’t plan on doing it going forward, I will just take more care when putting my rods back in the case.

Best investment I have made – every time I go out with buddies they want to store their rods in my case as well for travel. I can fit 5 rods with reels in it.

I have seven rods in mine and yes I have to break down all the handles. All they would need is another 1/2 inch and no breakdown.

I use this case & I always fold down all of my reel handles. As far as folding down reel handles this is one reason I really like using “Frabill Bro series Ice reel”, because it allows you to fold down the reel handle with the push of a button. I have never had any problems with the reel & the drag is pretty smooth, I wish more spinning reel companies would add this feature to their reels.

I usually fold mine down, but theres a lot of times at the end of a day when its dark out, bitterly cold, and you just wanna get in, and in those cases i just throw my reels in without folding the handles and they are just fine. I have never broke a reel from doing this, and furthermore, never bent any part of a reel from doing this.

My reels are all 500’s, 750’s and 1000 shimano’s just for a reference.

You will like the hard case, many people over-look them thinking they are too expensive, however when you could potentially break 4-5 rods at one time, the Otter case is worth the money for me, more of an investment especially if you like to take care of your gear. I fold down the handles half of the time depending on what I am doing.

I am with Grant. I like to break mine down and generally I head to the ice with the reel handles folded neatly, but once my hands are cold and it is dark they have a tendency to ride home unfolded. I have never had any issues and I am running The smallest pfluegers and the 500 & 750 series Shimanos.

I own 2 of the cases, I actually feel guilty if I leave a rod unprotected by my Otter Rod case. You will love it!
