LX-7 cold feet…

I thought for sure this was going to be easy once I got the financial green light to order but now that i have the money in hand and I am ready to pull the trigger I am having second thoughts.

I decided last spring that I had to have an LX-7 and have had my heart set on owning one by the start of this ice season. I have been saving a little here and there since mid summer and now I am ready to purchase. If it wasn’t for the introduction of the LX-6 I probably would have already ordered my now.

My first question is for those of you who own the 7 and have seen the 6 are you still glad you own the 7? or is there anyone that owned the 7 and decided to switch to the 6?

I have researched until my eyes crossed and Im familiar with the specs of both and I understand the differences that were explained very well on here in previous posts. The size difference and extra weight really doesn’t bother me and I already have the cash in hand, so it seems silly to me not to get the 7.

I guess I am just looking for someone to sway me one way or another. I just dont want to get the 6 and after using it for 2 weeks wish i had gotten the 7.

I live in upstate NY and do not have the luxury of attending a big Ice show to take advantage of show prices so if anyone has any suggestions on who has good pricing on these units i would really appreciate it as well

    thanks in advance guys!

Buy a 6 and get a TUC rod with the leftover money!

I owned the 7 for one season.. Size does matter to me as I spend a ton of my time running and gunning…

So I sold my 7 and have the 6..

You know the comparison so no need for me to repeat..

You will love the 7 !!

I’ll throw in my .02 on pricing. Reeds has never steered me wrong. I have bought the majority of my electronics from them over the years. Just bought an ice house from them last week at the show. They are a class act in my mind.

I own a 7 and I like the bigger screen for me.And I will get the upgrade to the 9 when it is available, which I do not think will be an option on the 6.
Which ever way you go you will like the product.

If you ever plan on getting a high speed transducer and using it as a summer graph I would definitly go with the 7. You will love having the bigger screen in your boat.

If you are ever considering purchasing and LX-9 in the future I would also go with a 7. Marcum offers you the ability to upgrade your LX-7 to an LX-9 if you pay only the difference in retail price.

If you answered no to both of those questions then from purely a fishing standpoint if are constantly moving from hole to hole the LX-6 may be the way to go. If you spend most of your time sitting in your shack or on a bucket in one place I’d stick with your gut and go with the LX-7.

I currently have the 7 and am most likely going to keep it even though I am an obsessive “hole hopper” The only change I’m going to make is to stop by Marcum one of these days and pick up one of their new 2012 soft cases for the 7/9. They added a new easier to carry handle that I think will help

Great stuff guys, thanks for the responses. The 9 conversion ability doesn’t do much for me, but there is a strong possibility that it may find its way onto the boat come summer time. I, also am a hopeless hole hopper, the weather has got to be pretty terrible to confine me to my otter all day. Most times its a couple rods my bucket and my flasher, constantly on the move. The more I think about it the more I dont really think a little extra bulk on my flasher is going to be a problem or slow me down.

What exactly is different about the new soft case? Was there no handle on the previous model? and do this years new units come with the new soft case or is it an upgrade you must buy separately?

I saw that, unfortunately if you click on the offer and go to details it says electronics are excluded.

Last year’s model had the handle stitched to the inside of the case making it possible for the handle to fall down behind the monitor. The new case has a thick rubber handle which makes it very easy to latch on to and the handle is stitched to the outside of the pack making it impossible for the handle to fall down inside the pack and behind the monitor.

Good to know thank you James.

Should all of the 7’s out there this year have this new soft case or is it going to be hit or miss depending on the individual stores inventory?

I just ordered my 7 through Marcum and it came with the 3.01 version already on it, i would think that since the stores are getting new inventory of them that they would have the new software on them

Another factor you might want to consider is screen configuration. I’ve only fished with the 6 a bit, and had all of last season under my belt with the 7. I like the flasher dial mode quite a bit, and for my taste it was more difficult going from the 7 to the 6. In terms of form-factor/size, I prefer the LX-6, but if you rock that flasher dial primarily, you might want to compare the two before buying.

The same case is used on the 7 and 9. The camera for the 9 has its own little pack that attaches to those clips. Easy on. Easy off.

Any chance we could get a shoulder strap? toss the flasher over your shoulder, auger in one hand, handful of rods……mobile!

Well I took the plunge today and purchased my LX7 and now I have a serious conundrum……

My girlfriend and I made the pilgrimage to our nearest Marcum dealer a Gander Mountain today(2.5+ hours from home).

I wanted to atleast get one last first hand look at the 6 and 7 side by side and if possible make my purchase. We got there and I examined the units again and decided on the 7.

Now here is where the issue arose.

Going in I was initially set on dealing with Marcum directly, because I wanted to make sure I got a new unit with the 3.01 software and the new bag with the outer rubber handle which was important to me as well. I explained to the employee that we dealt with that It was imperative that I got the 3.01 software because I have a Mac and would not be able to upgrade from home. He assured me that it was the brand new 3.01 software and was “just in” from Marcum. Well you can probably guess what happened next…. I drove all the way back home and like a kid on Christmas I opened it up and immediately realized it did not have the handle stitched to the outside of the bag……. Not only did it not have the new bag that I wanted to make sure I got, but it doesnt have the 3.01 or even the 2.9 software, it has the original 1.2 version software. I contacted the store i bought it from and they told me i could bring it back, i then asked who was going to pay the 70$ it was going to cost me in gas to come back out there and they had no answer for me. I tried to get in touch with Marcum to see if it would be at all possible to switch units somehow but there is no one there on weekends so I left a long detailed message.

Sorry for the long post but at this point Im just really bummed. Long summer of saving for something and all the excitement building to get it and now its turned into a giant expensive headache.

I have packed it all back into the box the way it was and will wait to hear from Marcum…

That really stinks, exactly why I try to go to shops like Thorne Bros instead of Gander Mountain. I understand it’s the closest to you so you are limited on choices.

    Wetsleeves,

I feel for ya, been in those shoes a time or two. Lesson learned is open the box right there in the store before leaving. Even if it means you purchase it first then open. I still do it before walking out the door, no question then if it ain’t what it was represented as. At that point I would ask to see the manager.

I know this comes too late now but it is something to consider next time something like this comes up.

Wetsleeves. I to feel your pain. I ordered one and it also came with the old version. Also the old case. I am going to call marcum on monday. I have dealt with their CS more than once and have been more than satisfied. I’m sure they will help.

I contacted Marcum today and talked to Chris about my case. I told him how mine had come with the old case. He said he has had a lot of questions about this all last week. He said he could not give me an answer right now as they have not decided how they are going to handle this. He told me to email him so they would have a record of the contact and he would let me know.
