Menards in Rochester has Colman 1 lb gas for $2.66 a bottle. I believe that’s the cheapest I’ve seen them in a while. Picked up enough to get me through the winter and then some.

Good find, Pilgrim. Looks like the Menard’s in St Paul is selling for the same price. … Can anyone here tell me how long one of those cylinders will last in a Portable Buddy? Just picked up one and am thinking the cylinders are the way to go over a 20# tank, especially since I will be dragging most of this stuff.

I just bought the adapter so I can refill the 1lb cylinder with my 20lb tank….If my math is right will be way cheaper..

i have been refilling for years, i haven’t had a problem. sometimes a bottle will leak a little bit, i just screw that one on a heater or put a torch tip on it, after the o-ring heats up they stop leaking. i find enough 1 pounders laying on the ice that people either loose when traveling or just trough them away on the ice, that i always have bottles to fill. what kind of problems have people had??? has anyone ever been arrested for transporting a refilled 1 pounder???

I too have been refilling the 1LB tanks for years and have had very little problems with them. Once in a while the blow off vent will leak or the main valve will leak but as you indicated, sometimes it just takes a little time to warm up and seal again. I use the Mac Coupler MACCAPS, on the rare canisters that do leak, to seal them while they are warming up. I usually can remove the cap later without any issue. Sometimes you will have a bad tank and will need to dispose of it correctly. The best part is that you can refill for less than $1.00 / tank if you do it correctly.

I also started refilling but I can only refill them half way. I weighed the refilled tanks and the most I could get in was 9oz in any of them. I warmed the 20lb tank to room temperature and froze the 1 lb overnite in the freezer before refilling. Someone said that was the best way to do it. Anyway I know it’s cheaper but now I will have take more 1lb tanks to make sure I have enough RH

Thanks, Steve, and to others that commented here about refilling the pound cylinders. I don’t have a 20-pound tank, and for the trouble, I’d probably prefer to not mess with that stuff. Kudos to those of you who have been able to figure out how to refill consistently and save money.

I work with flamable gases and I’ve seen many different accidental ignitions. At $2.66 a bottle, it’s not worth it. There’s a reason they say, no refill. But, it’s your a..!

    I agree.

Saving $100 isn’t worth the risk.

Everyone admits to some of the bottles leaking after they fill them.

That doesn’t sound very safe to me.

My buddy watched his $600 Otter burn up over a refill. How does that figure into your cost savings? He was checking a tip up. Turned around and fire was already pretty active in the corner of his house. He luckily got his flasher out and we got water from a bunch of buckets but it trashed his skin of his house to no repair. I see that chance alone as not worth my effort. I hate spending money, but it will cost me much more to have it ruin something than to suck it up and pay for a bottle.
