First off I would like to thank you all for the great information that is shared on this board. I am relatively new to ice fishing and after borrowing my uncles auger and flasher last year I have decided to purchase my own for this year. Being a broke college student, I cannot afford the latest and greatest. My question is how good of an auger is the one below? And is it worth $225? It looks like an 8 inch lazer mag with the 49cc tecumseh..Thanks for any info.

I would say over priced. I saw a newer lazer mag 10in @ pawn store in Virgina mn for 160. Also you can find recons for $329

That is an older model and is worth about $125-$150 tops in GREAT shape.

I would also say $150 is about right as well. If the blades were new id consider a little more.

I have owned that same auger for 12 plus years. It has been a great auger. Still starts within a few pulls every time. Rather light and cuts great. I had the clutch go out after 8 or 9 years. Took it into the location in big lake . The guy said have as eat I”ll take a look in about 20 minutes he was back and said he had to replace the clutch. I asked what I owe and he said it was on the house. He also said the blades were dull so he replaced them. All for free after 8 plus years of had use. Aim a strikemaster owner for life. Will have to upgrade one of these years.

I’d offer him $140 and half of a meatball sandwich. Nothing more.

thanks for the advice, i may go look and offer a substanially lower amount. Also do you think I should be looking at a newer but cheaper auger like an eskimo or will I be more satisfied with a used strikemaster if I can find a deal?

We have an old lazer mag that is older than me (I am 15) and still runs like a champ and we icefish a good amount. I would say get the lazer mag any day over an eskimo. I know alot of people who swear by a jiffy but I recommend getting an old lazer mag if it is in the right price range

Good brand but that price may see high. Check out the blades to see what kinda of condition they are in? No leaks on the motor and the shaft is not bent. All those add up to $150. The rest is up to you and the vanity of the unit. If if runs and drills its $150. If there are better points the value can go up slightly.

Paid $125 for one last winter. Used 2 times a year and looked brand new. Even gave me the rest of his 1st quart of 2 cycle oil and Cabela’s cover and spare blades.
