    Does anyone know what the new 3.01 update will cover?

    Just off the top of my head here’s some of the highlights… Zoom in chart mode, temp sensor compatibility with summer transducers, increased control of sensitivity, etc.

    when does this go live?

    No release date has been given yet but I’m guessing it will be 2 – 3 weeks.

    I don’t have a 7 yet, am still a 5er, and will try really hard at the ice show in a couple of weeks to keep my wallet in my pants, but this digital upgrade model that Marcum has moved to is a very, very powerful feature. The sky would seem to be the limit as long as the case and hardware can support any new tech. From a product management perspective, I wonder how and when they’re going to determine where to start making the break between free upgrades and revenue generating versions. Maybe they’ll go with an annual subscription fee at some point; maybe changes in case and hardware will drive it…very interesting nonetheless from the business side of the house.

    Chris, I just got my LX7 about two weeks ago and yes, its all that so far! Can’t wait to get it on the ice. By the way, I have been a vexilar user for over 10 years and I just made the move to Marcum this year. Trying to describe the move from the FL20 to the LX7 but can’t up with the appropriate word yet!

    I would hope it would be a while before they would start charging for firmware upgrades. While I like my LX-7 it was not towards the end of last season that the 2.9 upgrade was made available. This upgrade made the unit usable and stable. A lot of people spent good money and were “beta” testers. I personally had faith that they will do the right thing and stand behind their product and fix any issues but I always had my LX-5 as a back up and I have no regrets and own several other Marcum products (LX-7, lx-5, Ice Troller, and LX-i Looking forward to the next firmware update.

    I don’t know that MarCum ever has plans to charge for software updates.

    I would hope that would be the case. Now if an update required additional hardware. I would completely understand the need to recover costs for the hardware.

    I think the key to the digital platform and the future of it relies in the differences between an UPDATE, and an UPGRADE.
    Take 3.01 for example, it updates current features of the 7 and makes them better whereas the current 7 owners might have the option to Upgrade to the features of the 9 at a cost.

    I hope marcum runs it like that.

    Update = Free
    Upgrade = $

    Would make sense.
