ice fishing & Hunting Boots

While sitting in the deer stand this year, I realized that my money would be more wisely spent on a new pair of boots versus throwing it away on a new pair of toe warmers each morning.

Easy solution, right? Not really as I’ve come to learn.

I could easily buy a pair with 2000 grams of thinsulate and keep the toes warm in any weather. Well, what I’ve read in a few reviews is that some of these boots with high insulation ratings actually have poor insulation in certain areas, like the toes.

Even so, if I find a pair of boots with high reviews of warmth, I almost certainly find reviews for the same boot stating they’re as big as Buicks.

Thinking about how I’ll use these boots, and bringing this post back to the ice fishing forum in which it resides, I realize I need a boot that is not only warm for 4 hours in the deer stand, but is also of a size that will allow me to be mobile on the ice, not to mention operate the pedals in my truck.

I also need a boot that is completely waterproof so I’m not starting the day with wet feet from drilling a bunch of holes.

What do you have for boots? Do you have any recommendations for combo stand hunting / ice fishing boots?

I have two pair of Itasca 2000 gm thinsulate boots…lightweight, waterproof and warm feet. I believe these are also the 2000 gm boots Cabelas offers. I paid $69.99 for them and have been very pleased with there performance.

If you’re serious about a quality pair of boots, I have a suggestion for you, get some quality socks also. Not the kind that fit size 9 through 14 but a pair that is your size, yes the make socks in sizes. But them first and take them with you when you buy the boots, you’ll be surprised how this works. good luck

We have been using the wool socks that Red Wing Shoes puts out. They are the red colored ones. Been using them for over 10 years now for fishing and work. Hold up very well. Whoever does laundry make sure you do not put htem inthe drying

I’d get another pair of Alpha Ice Kings. They are warm and light. They are noticeably lighter than the icemen I used to wear and I fish all day long when I have a chance. They feel like tennis shoes. Really tough to get a boot that will work for hunting and icefishing unless you don’t move alot when you hunt. You can even get a discount if you go to the site sponsor. they are good to work with and even sent a free pair of socks that I love.

I put my 400 gram kenetreks on in the september when bow season opens and dont take them off till april when the ice is off!! I must have good circulation – my feet rarely get cold out ice fishing.

I dont care how many new fangled boots come along they all chase the same dream. How can I be warmer than felt lined pack boots. And as fast and easy to dry out. Thats all I will ever wear when its very cold, whether on stand or ice fishing. Its worked for 30 years so I have some experience on the matter. That’s my .02

James will you be using the Alphas this year or are you trying something new?

Nope, for the first time in years the boots I wore in a previous season are in great shape to start another. I love how warm they proved to be last year and they managed to keep water OUT which was an area that other brands had failed at miserably for me. So, there’s no reason to change.

So it sounds like I should look at the Alpha Ice Kings.

What would you recommend for a quality pair of socks to wear with these?

Good Morning,Lars. Recieved your E-mail regarding ice fishing /hunting boots. Alot of great ideas were posted. The Alpha Ice Kings as whiskerkev mentioned are a great choice. Was just on the phone with a gentleman who purchased a pair of the Hunt PAC Extreme 2000g and he was very happy (he is family and would tell us if he wasnt). Our website has many winterboot choices and we would love to help. Plus our IDO discount is also a great deal. Lars if we can be of some help just let us kow. Thank you Wil& Wendy

For sure Drifter . Socks are very important. They can make a boot feel even more comfortable, as well as cheap/thin socks can do the opposite. Keeping the feet happy is all part of the experience. Good day Wil

just finished my 3rd deer season with muck wetlands. i wear them sept – may. they can be a little light on below 0 days icefishing, but having a portable to take the chill out works fine. my next pair is going to be the woody max, they are rated to -40. they also have one other pair, artic pro that are rated to -60. i have put alot of miles on my wetlands walking the dog 2 or so miles a day for 3 years. they have held up well. they fit my foot really good and there is no slop when walking. they offer everything that you are looking for, warm, easy to drive with, and can keep your feet dry until you go in water over the top of the boot.
