Lakes of specific colors!

A few years back I ran into a lake that had big schools of suspended crappies. Problem was they were lock-jawed! I’m sure many others have seen this.

I was in 35 ft of water with the majority of the fish around 25 to 30 feet. I tried spoons, jigs, and more jigs. I tried meat. I tried plastic. All had minimal results, but they were nice fish when I would get one to commit.

After a while of trying different baits and colors I started to get something put together. With an orange jig and orange plastic I could get fish to respond almost every drop it seemed! It was great, till the orange ran out.

After catching several fish and running low on orange plastic, I tried other colors, to no avail that’s all they wanted from me in that lake that year!

Has anyone seen this same thing where fish act like they truly only want one color or one special jig?

I have seen pannies that absolutely crush a green ant and won’t even look at a white one. This is same hole, in like 10 fow…. on camera it was almost laughable

Seen this? Yup. My example would be Cal and I fishing perch out in Webster SD last winter. He was fishing a gold slender spoon with green tape. I was fishing a silver with green tape. Cal is smoking the fish. I’m stuck watching Cal… smoke the fish. As soon as I switched to the gold spoon it was game on.

There’s no doubt in my mind that the tiniest little details matter and often make the difference between a slow day and a great day.

Seems like more and more over the years the fish like to key on specfic colors. I know that color is a small portion of the fish catching equation, but it is gaining importance!

Absolutely. Especially in lakes with big algae blooms. What sticks out to our eyes is much different than what sticks out to their eyes. That’s my theory anyway…

Yup see it every year where one lure dominates and thats the only one the fish want. also watched guys with tip downs dominate the guys that were jig fishing with plastics/spikes for crappies. Just gotta be versatile and give em what they want or go home fishless

I’ve seen it happen on Gills and Crappies in my area, red seems to be the go to color on those tough bite days.

It’s amazing how a subtle change such as color, or profile can make the difference in getting shut out, or having a good day on the ice.

Late ice heavily pressured crappies are famous for only hitting one exact presentation in my area. sometimes you have to just set the rod down and watch eventually they bite.

Color is most definitely an important factor.
I have seen it many times where having the right color is a huge difference maker and very specific to the body of water.
