Here is the deal, I am working on building a ice house. I have a nice frame that cranks down. The things I would like to hear from you that have done this, is what do you recommdend building it out of. I would like to make it as light as possible. What should ideas do you have for the outside, inside, must haves, etc….. TIA Graff

Spray in foam for sure. Think about changing your hand , boat winch crank downs to the style that has internal braking system. They sell them at Northern Hyd. It is amazing how much damage that winch handle can do to your hand/arm. I have a bar with 6 screws permanently in my arm

You definitely want to start with a sturdy a tough base the floor and runners should be treated lumber if you dont want to have an aluminum base welded up which would last for ever but would be pretty spendy. I would recommend framing it with only 2×2’s this will eliminate considerable weight with out losing strength. After framing it all and incorporating windows and door I then do the entire outside with rolls of aluminum sheeting including the roof. I attach the aluminum sheeting with heavy duty staples. After the entire outside is sheeted with aluminum then I use 2 inch pink foam insulation on the inside between your 2×2’s. Measure the area between your 2×2’s and cut you insulation using a skill saw or any circular saw 1/8th of an inch larger than the area you want to fill this will assure a nice snug fit for the insulation and will really stiffen up all of your framing. The insulation will really add strength with out all of the weight and will really hold heat in. By using aluminum on the outside you will never have to worry about water damage and it is very strong. I hope this will help give you some ideas on building your Ice Shack Have a great ice fishing season.

I’m currently building a permanent myself and have acquired a lot of good on iceshanty.com. There’s a lot of pics of shanty builds. Take an hour and go through all the posts. I’m building my walls out of 2×2’s, and am planning on putting a rubber roof on it. Good Luck
