Lazer Mag Repair Update

As I reported I had trouble with my 10″ lazer mag. It would idle fine at startup but would not go to high rpm without bogging out and dying. I had dropped it off at the authorized dealer last april and told him to fix it. Well, two weeks ago I called and he said he just started on it and it needed a new carb that was $90 but he couldn’t get the carb for 4 weeks. Enough of that. I went and picked up the auger. I called D Rock and ordered an ignition coil and carb kit.

Took the auger in my shop and tore the entire motor down to the piston. Checked for carbon build up on the exhaust port and all was good. Piston had no signs of stress so I went ahead and put in the new ignition coil. Rebuilt the carb and reassembled the entire auger.

Fired the auger up and she ran a lot better but was still bogging down on the high side. Well I was fortunate to have the magic Walbro carb adjustment tool and I adjusted the high side of the carb and that did it. She is now a screamer and ready to cut ice!
Spent about 2 days tearing the engine down and cleaning everything and putting it back together, but really had fun doing it.

If anyone has questions about the Solo engine, I can probably give you the answer! LOL

OK for the risk of sounding stupid, what is the magic Walbro Carb tool, a screwdriver?

If a mechanic tells you that you need a new carb that means you need a different mechanic. 99% of the time if it is bogging you need to replace or adjust the diaphram and maybe a little carb cleaning. Ive done a bunch of these and never ever replaced a carb on anything. There isnt really anything that can wear out on a carb body.

You are 100% correct! That’s why I picked it up and took it home.

The special tool looks like a nut driver but much smaller. Walbro has the high and low carb adjustment so the average joe can’t adjust it. They insist you take it to a dealer. Some kind of emissions bs. The end of it looks like a “D”. On the lazer mag, the adjustment closest to the motor is the low side and the adjustment closest to the filter is the high side.

high and low carb adjustment sounds just like my old 1/8th scale nitro truck luckily in the cold its easier to stay in-tune with those adjustments, compared to the varying humidity in the spring/summer/fall months.

The adjustment screw heads are completely round with one edge ground flat and they are recessed. They don’t want the general public to touch them. You can wedge a small flat screwdriver in there to adjust them, otherwise the tool is $30-40.

the only reason we replace a carb on a small engine or chainsaw its for one reason its cheaper and faster then puttng the labor and carb kit in. Not always the case i rebuild 15 to 25 carbs on average per month and the two biggest things i see are stretched diaphrams or leaking welch plugs and of course those who choose to leave fuel sit in the carb for a very long time.

As for the solo i had mine tore down 2 nights ago to clean it retighten some loose screws and tune it up.

    1 airfilter

1 fuel filter i upgraded to a better design here

    1 new plug

    1 k20-wat walbro carb kit

a new air purge bulb and lines yes it is not actually a primer

and 1 new spark plug boot

and i cleaned out and regreased the transmission.used plenty of blue loc tite as well.

And that little adjusting tool is not for sale unless you are a dealer and if a dealer sells one its a 3500 dollar fine. so if you have one do not advertise it. (stupid EPA)

We get calls several times a year making sure that we do not sell that tool and they pound in the fact that it,s a 3500 dollar fine if you get caught selling one to the general public. the buyer is scott free the seller gets the fine

As for the environment thing i doesnt make sense to me either. But being that i work for a husqvarna dealer i,ve been filled in on all the stupid little things the EPA enforces.

I understand what you are saying and I believe you. The big question I have is if you are not allowed to sell it and the EPA keeps tabs on you, how in the world can the general public order it off the internet from very reputable sellers? How in the world can Homelite sell it? Doesn’t make any sense to me?

I understand, I’m not trying to be confrontational, it just doesn’t make any sense to me. They keep calling you and bothering you but Homelite openly sells them. I guess that’s the Gov for ya!
