It is about that time of year I start thinking about Ice. This will be the first year my ATV will be used exclusively for ice fishing.

My main goal is to find a good auger mount and a universal windshield and I am having difficult finding both. What are my options? Also, for people that use their ATV for ice..what are the ideal tires I should be looking for?

X3 on the digger anchor auger carrier. I have used the mad dog one from Cabela’s too, and I can not recommend it. The velcro straps that they use to hold the auger in place are a major hassle.

My issue with that digger auger carrier is that the auger head isn’t fully supported. I’ve made some six to eight mile runs over very broken ice and was very glad to have the weight of the head supported by the handles instead of the auger or auger stem. Having said that, the velcro can be a pain on the Mad Dog. I have thought about replacing them with Kolphin ratcheting mounts that similarly grab the auger handles but the Mad Dog is not that much of a pain in the butt…yet.

If you add their L bracket, the weight of the auger head is carried on it.

The reason I chose the Digger was because of it’s ability to carry a StrikeMaster Strike Lite auger in the correct position. Obviously that won’t be an issue with the new Honda 4 stroke or any 2 stroke auger, but it is important for the Strike Lite.

Thanks everyone I like all the options posted. So my next question would be, what is the most heavy duty carrier? I Plan on keeping the auger mounted on the ATV to save room in my SUV. So for long trips up north will these options suit me?

And my second question.. Should I be looking for new tires or chains?

That would be the ticket then.

Will your cover fit over the auger while mounted or are you using an enclosed trailer? Road grit is bad enough on the bike, I certainly wouldn’t expose an auger to it. Regarding traction, I run rear chains which is fine for deep snow to a certain point. I am considering tracks though for a “go anywhere, carry everything” approach that an ATV offers over a sled.

This is now I’m currently set-up. The extensions for the auger mount are sleeved and pop out for easy removal in order to cover it when traveling.

I got chains for my wheeler a few years back. Amazing what that thing will go through with them on. Be sure to deflate your tires, install tightly, and re-inflate. You don’t want a chain coming off at 20 mph. I got my chains at the man store, Fleet Farm, $45.00. I’ve thought about a set for the front, but then I can’t lock in the differential. On those glare ice years, they would be nice to have though.

As for auger carrier, I’ve got the Mad Dog. It’s OK at best. My older wheeler, the front rack doesn’t allow me to spread the two mounts as far as I would like. I make it work, the auger is supported fine, but it’s a bit of pain securing when the digits are cold. I leave my auger on the wheeler all season long, even during transport.

Add an Otter box to the back and you got yourself one heck of an ice rig.

I’ve got a big box, so I like to show it off.
