Looking at ordering a custom ice rod from Thorne Brothers this year. The primary purpose will be fishing for panfish. More specifically, looking for a rod that will fish 1/16th Slender Spoons well. I am thinking of going with a 28”-31” length rod.

    Thanks for any input.

Do you want to feel or see the bite?

I bought a quiverstick for the exact purpose of jigging small spoons and I have been very happy. I use it mostly for perch fishing.

Quiverstick sounds like what you would want then. Give the boys at TB a call and see if they concur.

FWIW – Pat Smith and Matt Johnson, the guys many of us relied on over at TB to help guide rod selection and to put together custom rod orders, no longer work there. Their many years of experience with customers will be missed and very difficult if not impossible to replace.

Go with REC guides. You will never regret using them on any rod. The create a more responsive tip, reduce ice ups, and never seem to wear.

I personally like the short cork handle so you can position the reel on any spot you choose.

thorne came out with a tripwire rod just received mine ask about which weight tripwire u prefer not the rod just the tripwire the rod is a light action panfish rod i went with a 28in. rod as i own 2 other sweetheart panfish thorne bros. rods also look at the hidden hood handle option i normally fish tungsten jigs in the 3 to 5 mm. size and went with the medium light wire also both style rods are graphite which i prefer and they will put your name or whatever you want on the blank very cool mine says (foof’s gill getter)whatever you choose u wont go wrong with a thorne bros. rod also could buy just the tripwire for $10.00 a piece to add to any rod you own good luck with whatever you choose

own 3 thorne bros. rods 28in. sweetheart panfish also came out with a rod called the tripwire just received one has a titanium wire strike indicator that will not freeze up also could purchase just the tripwire for $10.00 and put on any rod also had all my rods made with the hidden hood handle well worth it also tripwires themselves come in light and medium light action talk to thorne bros. tell them what weight jigs you use they will steer you in the right direction i use mostly 3 to 5mm tungsten jigs and went with the med.light tripwire this is just the wire not the rod weight also they will put your name or whatever saying you want on the blank very cool mines called (foof’s gill getter) give them a look either the tripwire or panfish sweetheart rods also both are a graphite blank which i prefer good luck with your decision cannot go wrong with any thorne bros. rods
