My nephew uses nothing but braided ice line on all his rigs. He says it’s stronger than mono and doesn’t freeze up. What are the pros and cons of using braided ice line?

    Thank you,
    Mike

Pros – very sensitive. Thin diameter so lures fall quickly. Good hooksets due to limited stretch.

Cons – they ice up. All of them, although I’ve not tried the 832 Ice Braid yet. I don’t care what anyone says about the others as I’ve fished with them all and if it is cold outside and you’re fishing outside… they’re a royal pain. If you’re fishing inside, icing isn’t an issue. They’re also very visible in the water so you’ll need to run a low-vis leader in clear water.

I am going to give it another try this winter (assuming we have ice). I tried the fireline ice two years ago and hated it. It froze up and was impossible to work with unless I was inside a heated shanty or it was well over freezing outside.

Waste of time and money…But good luck. Tried it last year I fish outside of the hut too much.

Thanks for all the information. I think I will try it on one of my rigs…for field testing purposes. -)

I keep a couple of both mono and braid for ice fishing if I am fishing deeper I like to use the braid, if your shallower mono/fc is fine.

Give it a try and see what you think.

Hey fellas, long time lurker on this site, thought it was time to join the fun. Lots of good info on here.

Has anyone used nanofil on an ice rod? Thinking about spooling some up thinking it might not hold water like traditional braids. any thoughts?

Even when the line itself doesn’t freeze as much, I always had issues with more ice on the rod guides. Literally freeze and immediate buildup with every drop/retrieve. Haven’t tried Nanofil.

Looking forward to the 832 Ice Braid to try it out, as I’d much rather fish braid. I use the 832 for open water, so I’d be comfortable dipping a toe in the water with the ice version. Especially on blades or bigger baits. During open-water use, that longer rod really picks up more slack and drives that hook home. I’ve gone to fairly stiff (and longer) rods fishing jigging raps, blades, and other large baits because of it, and also for the control you get as opposed to a softer action. Sometimes friends will joke that I’m trying to hit clouds on my hookset, but I’m convinced that with mono, even floro, on bigger hooks and bigger baits, esp. in deeper water that you need a pretty good swing to consistently stick hooks in big fish.

If you use braid in the winter, you have to keep it sprayed down with Reel Magic Reel Magic Spray. It helps shed the water off the line before you use it like a towel to soak up all the water into your guides.

I tried Nanofil last year……..DON”T waste your time!! In the cold weather it has EXTREMELY bad memory!!! I couldn’t even use it, because it held the coils so bad. It may be an OK open water line, but is terrible on the ice.
