Structure on a String

I have seen this advertised here. I want to know if people use it and does it seem to work. My parents lake is very stained so you don’t have much weed growth over 5 feet of water. In the winter we are fishing for walleye, crappie and perch in 15-20. Do you think that using those would attract fish. Secondly has anyone made their own. I’m thinking you could buy some strands of ivy at a craft store attach a weight and some line and you have essentially the same thing.

    Thanks

I’ve used it in the past. Seldom fish on the ice anymore though.

Homemade. The homemade ones I’ve seen fall apart in cold weather. Water freezes to them and it’s game over. The ivy is made for indoor temps and no one wants to litter the ice with plastic pieces.

I think they work best on panfish. Although others have good luck with eyes.

The only time they didn’t seem to work for me was panfishing on Winni. Fish would be bitting slowly, I put down 5 strings and the fish would stop altogether.

Moved and repeated…same results. Dropped my camera down and found out that northern pike liked the weeds too.

i asked about this last year, about the portable weeds on a string. alot of members on another site said they had tried with not so great results, that just having a set of artificial weeds in the area for a day wont be a fish magnet. they suggested that I should put fallen tree branches and such in a spot before ice or after ice, and let the fish get aquainted to the spot, then it should be golden… xmas trees work great for it.

I got the 5 pack, I’ve had pretty good results on panfish, and the perch at Mille Lacs like them too(it’s fun to have the camera down there during the ice).

If you have them installed for awhile so the fish can find them they work well, Atleast the have for me while pan fishing.

I have thought about using them but I picture a northern wrapping around all the strings and making one huge mess.

It is already a huge pain when they find my other line

In my opinion its not really worth it. I ran into lots of problems with holes freezing over and I was not able to get them out without breaking. Id rather hole hop then deal with the hassle of structure on a string..
