So with year under my belt of ice fishing with MarCum LX-7 and the new advancements of the LX-9 and LX-6 leaves a lot to choose from for any icehead. Taking price out of the decision, what are you going to fish with this winter?

    A new LX-9 or LX-6?
    LX-7?
    MarCum mechanical Flasher?
Or sticking to the same flasher you have had for many years?

For me….I am going to a LX-6 because of the amount of hole hopping I do and rarely sit still when on the ice. Same great features as its big brother, just a bit more compact.

    Cal,

I needed a unit that I could use for multi purpose fishing either on my boat, up in canada on a fly-in, or ice fishing. So I decided on the Lowrance HDS 5. I have the portable power pack and ice ducer, so I will be very interested to try it out this winter. So far on the water it has been flawless and helped to boat many walleye for me this summer. A bonus is the GPS function so I don’t have to carry multiple devices out on the ice. I only need my Lowrance and my Underwater camera.

Taking price out of the equation I’d like to have both an LX-6 for outdoor fishing and an LX-9 to set up in the perm shack

Taking price out of the equation….When angling, I will use my H-bird Ice 55, but most of the time I will still use the Marcum LX-I…the one that shoots through the ice…..I just use it to locate a spot before cutting a hole. Then this:

I want to do the LX-6 for hole hopping and the 9 for when I want to take a closer look at what the fish are doing and the structure that the fish are relating to..
With 60-70% of my time hole hopping the 6 will be getting most of the use. I have always wanted a good underwater camera so now that I can have both in one unit I think the 9 will be the one..

    LX7 & LX 5

I love the seven, but on the really bright blue bird days it’s tough to see. Hoping a sun shield is in the mix from Marcum..

I keep it simple and use a Showdown Troller and SD625c camera. Anything more than that and I might as well just throw dynomite down the hole….

I figure I’ll break out my old coal powered FL-20. Hopefully we have some ice, I just got the tri beam ducer for it and i only used it 6 times last year.

Same here. A soon as it breaks, I’ll have to find a replacement. I can’t imagine that’ll be anytime soon.

I’ve always been extremely resistant to change and I’m probably the last person to embrace new technology. When I went to get a new phone this past winter, the sales person asked me what I wanted to be able to do with my phone. I replied “talk to people.” She just couldn’t comprehend that a person my age didn’t want a phone that played music, got internet, had gps, does your dishes, etc. I don’t need an iphone, ipad, i-anything.

I love what Marcum is doing to advance the cause, but to be honest, those kind of technological leaps and bounds turn me off. Part of it is the unknown factor-that my caveman brain might not be able to figure it out. The other part is that what is the latest and greatest this year will be old potatoes in a year or two.

That said, I don’t think my Vex is going to go anywhere for a while. I’m comfortable using it and it does what I need it to do. When (if) the Vex ever poops the bed, I’ll have to look around but the simpler, less complicated item is always going to be my first choice.

My Vex FL-8 has served me well for several years now with out problems, but, when it dies, we’ll see whats new then. Seems like they’re just like a phone or a computer, no sooner then you bought it, it’s upgraded. Did run the auger this morn. That thing sure sounds better than a boat motor.

We will probably run our pair of lx-5’s again this year . the upgrade from an fl-12 ,and 18 was quite noticeable. Gotta leave some fish in the tank. Gonna take a hard look at the 6 and 9 at the ice fishing show. hopefully get to fish with someone that has one so we can see firsthand all the features.

Ill roll the FL-12 till it dies or I hit the lotto. I personally like the ol hum of the older flashers.

FL-18 bought here on IDO. I sure hate to take someone else fishing that doesn’t have one. I let them use it and I sit and sulk.

I’ll be running my LX7 for the second year and loving it. I’m hoping to upgrade it to the camera this year as well.

Me too Cal – I think I’ll be running the 6 quite a bit this year. Bigger screens are nice for the boat, but on the ice it can be a touch smaller.

If I can find someone to purchase my Ice 55, I will be running the LX6 and 7. If not I will most likely run the 7 and leave the 55 at home along with the fl8…..
