I know it’s early to be thinking about ice fishing but with all this heat lately, i can’t wait till ice.

Needing to get a 1 man portable for this Ice season and wanting to hear some feedback and direction from you guys on which make/model to be focusing in on when they start coming back into the stores this Fall

    Thanks

Never to early to think about ice fishing! We have Clam Scout Pros. Mine is 4 years old and used a lot.No issues at all with it. The seat is somewhat small but a lot of guys swap it for a boat seat. Pulls great and highly moveable. Go on to http://www.iceshanty.com. Lots of help there and a special section in the forums for Ice Shacks. Lots of ideas on different types and mods guys have done to them.

My clam Keani is ok except for the fact that the inside of the tarp is sprayed with a rubber coating that started to fall off after 1 month…. and their plywood seat is not good, but a boat seat fits righ to the screw holes.

I really reccomend looking and sitting in displays to get a feel for the actual size. I liked the Frabill except for the fact you sat so far forward you would not have enough clearance to even set a hook without hitting the tarp.

Bought a knock off of Commando Max at Theisens last fall on sale for cheap. No problems so far.

Just make sure it has more room inside it than you think you need. I made the mistake when I started ice fishing of buying a frabill recon. I don’t know if they have made those bigger now, but the model I have is barely even fishable. Every time I try and fish with it I hit the ceiling and feel super cramped because its so skinny and short.

I like fishing by myself in my Otter wild cabin actually, but its easier when I have another guy to help load it definitely.

Otter if I don’t have to pull it. Scout if I do have to pull it by hand.

I have the frabill trekker 2 man. It only ways 12 more pounds then the commando (71 lbs vs 59 lbs) and I think it is the way to go. You can get your holes spread out nicely get your heater in there and still have some room to move around. Also you have room if anyone wants to hop in with ya.

All the 1 man portables just seem way to small for me.

I like the models that have a zip open door because if the wind is howling it is nice to bank the house. I just bought an Otter, but I’m keeping my Clam Yukon for when I walk out.

I think for the guy with a lot of gear…….Nearly all of us these days; Otter is offering a darn nice house. I will be adding the one man this season.

Otter Quality had me hooked many many years ago.

Ditto on the room…..you can never have too much room. I like the clam flip-over and I own a Frabil. I bought the three man when I needed a two man, and have not regretted it one bit. And I (at 63) can still drag it out and get it on the truck by myself. Remember….roomy, roomy, roomy! The only way to go!

I would not look at a flip over that does not have a zippered door. It allows you to get in and out without having to let all of the warm air out, plus you can leave it open on the warmer days and still have the wind blocked.

Otter is the top of the line, I really like my older Eskimo Escape 250, it’s a two man but it’s easily enough for me to use as a one man.
