Who makes the best one man portable? I used fish trap for years but their tubs are so narrow they tip over when pulling with a 4 wheeler.

Otter is the toughest and biggest one man….but frabill the cammando is a nice unit for the money.
March 1, 2012 at 4:36 am #1044804Otters for me too. Tough, and the Cottage has lots of room to fish in with the house flipping up over length of the sled.

Derek
I hate to be the one to disagree with these guys…. so I won’t. Otter.
March 1, 2012 at 2:10 pm #1044880Otter by far for sled and flip over . Travel covers on the other hand have gotten thinner/less durable than in years past. I have a few friends who bought new covers and they are not lasting very long, while the Otter cover I have is app. 10 years old and still in fine shape. Lets hope Otter can fix this soon as I am looking to upgrade my Purple flipover for newer version
March 1, 2012 at 2:45 pm #1044894I love my Otter brand Team Wild flip over, the flip up bench seat is awesome.

FWIW – As of this season all Otter Pros are fully insulated.

to prevent your sled from tipping over pull it by hand, otherwise get an Otter.

March 1, 2012 at 9:51 pm #1045144I have been using my Fish Trap since before Otter even made fish houses.
My vote goes to the good old Genz fish trap.March 2, 2012 at 12:38 pm #1045296Quote:

I have to agree with you, Derek. My Fish Trap isn’t built like a tank, but it also doesn’t PULL like a tank. It’s small enough that it keeps me honest about what gear I bring with me. This keeps me form overloading it and makes it easier to pull even in snow. Often times all
I need are my flasher, 3 or 4 rods and a couple of jig boxes. When I start using a mchine rather than walking out, since it weighs less than 50 pounds, I can actually carry my Fish Trap in a rack on one of my machines rather than towing it behind and damaging all my valuable gear that it holds.
Speaking of weight, I’m sure they could have also built my Fish Trap from 4-gazillion denier canvass, but who wants to drag around all that extra fabric weight? Canvass is HEAVY!!! All I really need is a canvass heavy enough to keep the wind off of me when I’m inside.
I also like the fact that there are no poles to extend on my Fish Trap….just flip it over and I’m fishing. Extending the poles is an extra step that I just don’t want to have to deal with. I don’t care if you have the best pole system on the planet, eventualy they all bind or catch, and EVERY extendable pole system can be a hassle deploying in the wind.
My Fish Trap is also small enough that I often don’t even need a heater to keep it comfortable. Now I’m not one of those that like to maintain shirt-sleeves temperatures in my shelter, mind you. Just warm enough to fish without gloves. If I get too toasty and comforatble, I’m likely to camp out rather than go out and hunt the fish I’m after. With its insulated cap, my fishtrap can maitain these type of temperatures solely form my body heat, on all but the most miserable of days.

And the Amish still ride horses.
The tub on an Otter is twice as tough. The frame is stronger and the material is thicker making it more durable. I have had both and believe the Otter to be the best on the market today.
ekruger01Posts: 571March 4, 2012 at 2:09 pm #1045867off topic,Why hasnt otter ever built a one man that goes the long way on the sled kinda like the scout vs pro from clam….i think they would sell a ton of em!

You must not have checked out the Otter at all. The whole line, one man and up are built to open lenght ways
ekruger01Posts: 571March 4, 2012 at 8:00 pm #1045953y0u know what I meant! be nice to have one that you dont have to extend poles on!
March 5, 2012 at 4:16 pm #1046248I had the Scout, the one that you did not need to extend the poles on. I felt as if my shoulders were touching the sides, way to narrow in my opinion. The only way to fish 2 holes was to drill them diagonally so a dead stick could be dropped in. No room on the ice for a bucket and heater if a second hole was drilled either. Also everything I reached for always seemed to make its way to the far reaches of the sled. I do not care for this type of design at all and if it was a big selling point I would think Otter would have looked more seriously into the design.
It doesn’t even take a minute to extend the poles. The extra width is well worth the extra seconds of set up. Plus being in the middle of the sled everything is at my figure tips. And with the addition of the Otter Cady I am never digging around for anything anymore.
Just my opinion on the narrow Scout.
ekruger01Posts: 571March 5, 2012 at 4:59 pm #1046262totally understandable, I run a scout now. I used to have the pro but the extending poles is what made me switch to the scout. Now this could have been due too clams ill design on the buttons as well, i added the RPS clips to”help” with the issue but they just made it worse. Does the otter one man have the same pole system as the bigger models?
March 5, 2012 at 5:10 pm #1046268Yes, they are the heavy square tubing. I got my one man Ice Cottage used and still have had no problems with setting up. I have heard of some using steel wool and spraying the tubing with silicone to make setting up easier but I have not yet had to do this.
toxic11Posts: 222March 7, 2012 at 9:41 pm #1047138I had the frabill recon dlx, then the clam scout tc, and now just picked up the otter cottage and out of the three I love the cottage. So much room, so light. Love it
