Last Wednesday I got the call that I usually don’t get till mid March our so…
My buddy Brad said “The perch are biting good NOW! – get your butt up here!!” needless to say arrangements were made and me and Mike (my other friend….Ya,I know,it’s surprising I have more than 1 )…Friday by noon we were on our way
1st day we were on the ice @ sunrise (the hoar frost was an AMAZING sight on the way there)…the 10″ limit was established (nothing under),and the augers were put to work(and ended up working REAL hard).
We started out well, the first 5 fish were all were 11’+ then the size dwindled real quick with a bunch of 6 to 9’s and nothing bigger (must have got a 100 shorties at least)…
Only one thing to do then…Move, drill, fish.
The same thing happened again and again…Very rarely would we get more than 5 or 6 fish in our size, but slowly our buckets were full .
Day 2 was cold also, but warmed up real quick, and we hit a couple of the previous spots with about the same level of success, but with the bite really dropping off about 10:30 a scout was sent out….
Noon we got the cell call….get over here NOW!…1 hour later our buckets were full again!
Most of the weekend we were on sand flats with a bit of weeds in 13 to 15 ft of water, but the last spot was on a hump that came up to 6ft…we fished the slope of this hump @ about 8ft and it was every drop “fish on”.
As for lures…Swedish Pimples in silver or silver and Chartreuse, same colors and Firetiger with a Kastmaster, and shiner Forage minnow spoons, tipped with a minnow or just head, whole ones seem to work a bit better..
To add to the trip I got a 25″Pike on my 4lb test…not as big as Jesse’s,but fun none the less.
Pictures are,Brad and his grandson (who BTW caught the most big fish) with a days limit and a 16″Walleye to boot.Me and my pike, and a shot of Perch that are all 11″ or over from the 1st day.
I can’t wait till next year!!….MAYBE….Brad said a late March trip might be in the works also…….
I wonder how THAT would go over with FW
