I asked this question several times this past couple weeks…

I bought one of the first underwater cameras about 12 years ago; it was a bulky, heavy television system with all sorts of wire hook-ups, had to pack a battery and it was more work than it was worth. After about a year of use the camera leaked and I made best of the television set to watch TV. With a sour taste in my mouth I wasn’t too keen on another camera.

However, when MarCum came out with the color cameras I was mighty tempted, but still couldn’t pull the plug due to my stubborness.. This season came around I decided enough was enough and I have to have one for winter and summer use.

I’ll share a little secret why I feel much better about the camera purchase. The past two weekends I’ve used my VS625SD to scout for fishing spots in fishing contests, and it has proved to be an invaluable tool to locate fish and bring home cash and prizes. Most of the time the camera drops and fish actually swim from all directions directly to the camera and find the camera head an interesting attraction. We were able to roam all over and locate these active fish, and it worked wonders, even hours before fishing time began. We could identify what depth, bottom conditions, temperature and active feeding fish.

The only tough part was after locating these fish, finding out what exactly they wanted to bite the hook. These cameras don’t catch the fish, but they will help you locate your targets and leaves the rest up to you to get them to bite.

I found the camera package, like my LX-5, extremely well built, efficient and a extremely fun tool. It was so easy to hole-hop with this camera system and observe the underwater world in all light conditions. I can’t wait for open water season now!

ditto… and having the camera, helps you show what triggers a reaction too… lifting up, do they folow or go away.. pounding bottom, does it turn them on or off ?? I agree, with all said and the big kicker too, when fishing a tourney, you can “sort” them before they bite jig away form the little guy, so the big guy a foot away can bite instead

I’m on my second camera now. People often say to me, Isn’t that like cheating and I tell them only Chad Gnaus cheats. No,I’m kidding, I tell them all the electronics in the world won’t make them bite. It is amazing that you can watch them take the jig 3/4s of the way in their mouth and you can’t set the hook.

I have been borrowing a camera this year and was able to use it about 4x this season – I swear that the fish shaped camera attracts schools of fish. It’s like they feel more comfortable because this one odd fish is happy to chill in that area. It is also an invaluable tool for hooking friends to the sport.

so who makes the best camera. I have a camera that was bought at a home store and it seems to be more work than good. It is also heavy and bulky. and the picture quaility is bad.

I wish Marcum could add a microwave to my 625 fresh popcorn while watching the best reality show on the water would go together pretty good Unbelieveable the transformation in electronics over the last few years. Hard to believe there was a day when I fished without them.

It’s the next thing on my list of items to put in the Otter box for each trip. If anything, it will provide entertainment for the kids…and maybe a little for dad too.
