I hope this topic isn’t somewhere else on the forum. I’ve read the DNR website, but still not certain on the rules and if anything has been updated or changed recently. What can a guy still use for dead pike bait in Wisconsin and where can you buy it. I feel like all you can use now is the pre-packaged stuff you can find at say Fleet Farm. Any insight on still using smelt or herring that is preserved in a manner that doesn’t ruin the natural smell and oils?

In order to use dead bait in wisconsin it has to be able to sit on a shelf and not spoil. The linke below has the accepted bait preservation methods. As far as where to get it the prepacked bags from feet farm are one option another would be to buy it raw and preserve it yourself.

Well I guess the days of buying it frozen without preservatives are over. If anyone else is looking for big pike bait stop in Alma. I went out of my way today to stop at Schreiner’s on the south end of town. He has a great selection of all live bait for panfish, walleye, and pike. Picked up some of the biggest bait I’ve been able to find in WI in a long time. Big suckers and shiners.

Thought I needed to fill you in. buffalo city shiners come off the same truck ours do and they are sorted. What you are paying $7.00 for are medium shiners that we sell for $6.50 and we have 2 sizes larger than that.

FYI. Buffalo City charges $7 for a dz shiners and they are not sorted. Very nice shiners for the money.

Stopped again yesterday. Can’t get over the bait. Great size! I lived in northern MN for 2 years and we used 8-10 inch suckers for Pike on quick strike rigs. Didn’t think I’d ever be able to find bait big enough in WI to use those rigs again…let alone shiners! It’s a great way to deter those snakes when looking for the big females this time of year.
