I searched this topic but couldn’t find anything that answered my question. So here goes. I am looking to replace a 20 year old Jiffy Model 30. With the season ending sales. I want something much ligher thus looking at Strike master products. I have never used another Gas auger other than Jiffy and have always been a Jiffy guy. I like the weight of the strike Lite. But how are they for power. Do they have enough power to turn a 10″ chipper for the skid house? if not I may have to go to the Lazer Mag or Pro. I will mostly be using the 8″ lazer blade as I do most of my fishing out of my Fish Trap. I will cut 6 holes each weekend in the skid house. I am coming from a 3hp so don’t want to loose power and speed of my Jiffy. Thanks for the input.

Jiffy has a ton of power but it’s a dog. I’ve got a 27 year old Model 30. I used the FIL’s Strikemaster Mag and was impressed. It was about the same speed and a joy to use as it weighs 12# less than the Jiffy. You’ll be pleased.

Either way you go you will be happy. I love my Solo though so I would recommend either a 2.5 solo or 3 hp solo and get your 8 inch blade on that then swap out the 10 inch for the perm. I hope this helps… I do think either way an 8 inch blade is plenty big.

I had a Model 30 and lugged it around for yrs (I grew up in the town Jiffy is made). For the past 10+ yrs Strikemaster is what I have been using (mag 200 8 1/4″). I also picked up a used Solo mag 10 1/4″ for a back up auger, drilled holes with it for the first time this past wkend and no issues. I think the 30 (10″ auger) may “hog” more ice, but it is just so heavy compared to the Solo I picked up. I don’t think you could go wrong with the Lite or the Lazer Mag.

I am on my first year with the strike lite coming from the 3hp solo head 2 years prior. I love how the 4 stroke quietly runs, no mixing of gas and obviously how light in terms of weight. I personally wouldn’t put a 10″ drill on the strike lite for every day drilling. But the occasional drill with the 10″ drill in the permy would work fine. In terms of overall use of the strike lite for me, I am 100% satisfied for the style of ice fishing I do, not to mention the fuel economy is awesome, It takes a lot of holes to burn thru a tank of gas compared to a solo.

I am not as concerned about the gas useage as much I am about a quieter engine. But I don’t want to suffer with an auger that is lacking power. I like to drill a lot of holes and move around. How much slower are the strike lites than the lazer mags

If you are and “ice troller” then the strike lite is the right auger for you because of weight. It might be 1 or 3 seconds slower than a solo, so not much.

I went from the original Strike lite w an 8.25″ chipper to the 2.5 solo with 8″ laser bit….for speed and torque the solo wins, for quietness, fuel efficiency the strike lite wins….

On a side note, I had a bad egg with the strike lite, if it was colder than 15* that thing was a B*(ch to start….I hear the new ones (strikelite 2)arent as bad and I plan on picking one up at the end of the year used if I can find one…whichever you chose I think you will be fine for the 10″ bit on occasion.

I just found a eskimo z51 for $279 brand new. How do these compare to the strikemasters? Lazer mag is $379 and Strike light is $412 right now.

I started the year with a 3HP solo and a Strikelite 2. The solo was definitely faster but I find myself using the Strikelite 99% of the time due to the light weight. If you’re going to punch a small number of holes it doesn’t matter how much your auger weighs. If you punch holes for hours on end… it matters.

As for how they start and run… the Strikelite starts with a couple short pulls on the starter rope and it just purrs when running. Love it.

Strike lite are only made for 8inch blade only. They wont have enough juice to turn it. Solo engines will give you a lot more power and speed when you cut. The robin engine of strikelite is nice a quite. Don’t get me wrong. Strike lite is still an awesome auger. Its lite. Still cuts fast. But not as fast as a solo engine.

I got the strikelight2 and i have no issues i also have the new SM magnum with the 10″ chipper for cutting old holes and that Magnum is a BEAST it cuts old holes better then any auger ive had. But for hole hoppen you definitly want the stikelight2. ive had mine in 0below temps and never had a problem , 2 pulls and it fires right up. Good Luck in your search

The boys over in the service department at Strikemaster would be able to answer your question about putting a larger drill on the Strike Lite. Obviously there may be a warranty issue with changing out the drill, maybe not. For sure they would be able to tell you if it is going to work. I would imagine from their R&D prior to producing their augers they would know what the limits of the motor would be.

I would use the strike lite very little other than with the 8″ Lazer. My thoughts were a maybe use a 10″ in the skid house. 6 holes a weekend at most. Honestly I have never fished out of a 10″ hole so I may just buy a separate 8 1/4″ Magnum auger shaft for that purpose.

Well I ordered the strike Lite. The big C store has them on sale for $412 for that price I figured I had to give it a try. I am pumped to get out on the ice and get drilling!
