Great video Chris, I loved the segment about how to clean a whitefish.

Thanks Ryan. Whitefish are commonly mistaken as something that is NOT good tablefare. Nothing could be further from the truth. I’ll trade a bucket full of Walleyes or Crappies for Whitefish any day of the week.

I would have to agree. The first time you told us to keep one up there I was pretty skeptical because the look like your common “rough” fish. Boy was I wrong! Great eats right there

    Good Morning Fireline

Though it is true that the Whitefish is excellent smoked we simply fry the fish the same as we would Walleye. There is a commercial Whitefish guy up here that does indeed smoke these Whitefish and they are far too good!! Upon frying the meat you’ll immediately notice the meat turns snow white and the fillet becomes very flakey resembling cod. Truly the unsung meat for tablefare. Of course with any fish anglers need to take care of the fillets. Clean your catch as fresh as possible, and after cleaning the fish you will want to rinse thoroughly. Any slime left on a fish…….YEP tastes fishy!! LOL!!!

You’ll love it!! The best thing is a single Whitefish in the 5-7lb class is like feeding your family an entire limit of Walleyes….just taste better!!

Interesting, I’ve never heard of fried whitefish before. Seems like everyone talks about smoking them.

Whitefish are excellent boiled with potatoes and onion as well.

When we fished with Chris and my cousin caught a pig of a whitefish I thought about the smoker, Chris suggested throwing that into our fish fry that evening. We decided to keep the Whitefish seperate just in case this guide from the border was out of his mind with eating a slimy, oily, and stinky fish. Little did we know this fish was a fine table fare. Very good to eat, in fact day 2 of our trip we kept and sometimes argued over these whitefish. Give them a try they are very good to eat.

I remember that big ole whitefish Cal. That was a real bruiser!! We normally run into these fish as we turn our focus to Crappies, but this year they have been quite common on our Walleye/Pike trips!!

Hey Brian your right Whitefish are commonly smoked and DARN GOOD!! Frying these fish is just another great option for enjoying these fish.
