Generators on Ice

We are heading up to Mille Lacs sunday. My friend has a generator I don’t know what size or anything. We are probably only going to run it after 7pm when the fishing slows down just so we can charge the flashers and have some light for cooking and hanging out. Do you try to keep the generator far away from the house while it is running. I’ll be bringing a 100 foot extension cord, or don’t you think the noise has an impact?

    Thanks for the help.

Noise does have a negative affect when fishing.

You might want to check with the resort to find out if the house is set up for 120v.

If not bring some power strips, a fan ( it get HOT on the top bunk) and lights. I would also recommend some shorter cords if their house is not set up with outlets.

Its hard to tell if it really effects the fishing, but I try to make it as quiet as possible around the house. I like to get the generator up off of the ice either in the back of a truck or on a trailer. I’m not sure if it helps, but it seems like it would. Also when the house is on the edge of some structure I try to put the generator off of the deep side. We have our house in 14 feet and all of the fish in the permanent have bit when we had the generator running, lights on, and TV on.

When I have done it, we place the generator in the back of the truck with a topper, and leave the topper door open. This helps to cut down the noise. I would never leave it on the ice due to vibrations.

They do have outlets. A power strip is a good idea though

What about the noise across the ice? Doesnt it carry far?

I keep mine in the back of the truck bed. I run it all day and night to use the underwater camera hooked to the TV in the Ice Castle. We catch some pretty nice fish (perch and eyes. Doesn’t seem to bother them.

I know a guy that swears every time he starts his up in the evening, it turns the eyes on to bite I also remember as a kid, if the crappies slowed down, we’d fire up the sled and do a couple laps around the house… then they’d start biting again.. so go figure

Milemark_714 and I watched panfish (mostly gills)beneath black ice while drilling holes. Ice was about 6 or inches thick. Gills wouldn’t move until the auger actually busted through the ice. I don’t think a generator would make much difference once the ice is more than 8 or so inches thick

I say let ’em rip! While fishing the backwaters of the Mississippi, the trains did nothing to the fishing action. In some cases the bite got better.Never shut it down though.

We drive our trucks around our tip ups when the fishing gets slow. They pop quite often on the drive by.

X2 Works like a charm. Hot bite slows down. Run a couple hot laps.

If you do put it on the ice, make sure and bring a piece of plywood with you, some generators will heat the ice depending how low to the ground they are , then they sit in a pool of water and eventually ice when it freezes.
