and where can I buy one? Shimano Sienna 500 looks good, but wanted to see what else is out there.

For pan fish, I think they are great. Bigger fish, you will want a reel with a higher quality drag.

The Ticas are great, all I use SB500
I also use the Ticas there great@ a good price point!
January 13, 2012 at 4:23 am #1027474Shimano sedonas are a tough reel to beat for the price. They have a great drag on them that has proven its reliability to me over and over through battles with sturgeon, lake trout and big walleys all through the ice.
January 13, 2012 at 6:34 am #1027472I love sedona 500’s for pannies. I switched to stradic ci4 1000 on all my walleye rods.
January 13, 2012 at 2:11 pm #1027578I run all quantum reels and have been very pleased with them. Which reel is best for ice fishing is pretty open ended. As mentioned, if for pannies and drag isn’t a major issue, lessor reels will work fine as long as there smooth and lubed with a proper lubricant for cold weather; such as Hot Sauce. For larger speices like trout, walleye, wipers,..where a smooth drag is critical, the Quantum Catalyst CT10PTiC is a superb reel. Weighs about 7 and a half ounces and has held up to the abuse I give them.
January 13, 2012 at 2:31 pm #1027586Myself I really like the Abu Garcia 100U’s great little reels for the price !! I run all Shimano’s for open water but I’ve yet to try them for ice fishing. But as good as they are that also would be a great choice.
January 13, 2012 at 4:38 pm #1027660Well…I have to throw my .02 in
Pflueger President…either the 6820 or the 6825….Excellent drag and (when sauced especially) smooth as silk

I bought a Cabelas Fish EagleII 1000 on sale for $19.95 it’s surely built in the same factory as a President, all I can
say is I’m waiting for them to go on sale again, sweet reel
for 20 bucks.January 13, 2012 at 6:24 pm #1027712Quote:

I bought a Gander Guide Series reel 2 years back that was the same as a 6420 for the same price….I wish I would have bought 3!!
Still…$60 for a quality 10 bearing (7 for the 6820) reel is not bad.
clickerPosts: 130January 13, 2012 at 6:27 pm #1027714The cheap gander reels suck! However one of their reels they have a on a combo for 20 bucks is one of the best reels in my opinion I have owned for ice reels.
I prefer jiggle sticks for the style of fishing i do however.
January 14, 2012 at 12:29 am #1027797Any good quality reel that has been taken out of the box, cleaned of the manufacture’s grease/oil and treated with Hot Sauce
I do however prefer the Pflueger Presidents myself.

I can’t believe people use $200 reels for ice fishing. Had no idea.

My guess is he already owns them for use on summer rods and they serve double duty on walleye rods in the winter.

Thats what I do…Use the reels all year round. My highest end thorne bros walleye rod gets the sustain. I know of a ice fisherman that has twelve stellas on his ice rods, and they never come off the ice rods…

ummmm, OVERCOMPENSATING for something???
for what it’s worth…it’s pflueger president 6720’s here…January 15, 2012 at 12:06 am #1027976I doubt it, he’s about 6’8″ three hundred lbs and is a bricklayer in Minneapolis…he can be seen winning the strike master auger competition on YouTube….also can be seen at thorne bros often…
If you see him…ask him!!!!!January 17, 2012 at 5:04 am #1028791Quote:

Yes, that is exactly what I do.
December 31, 2017 at 2:19 pm #1739992Thought I would bring this one back to the top, I am looking for a reel for a JT-PANFISH SNARE rod. I have a Pfluger President 6930 for an open water rod I have and really like it allot very good construction and a all around solid reel. What model / size should I get to match my snare rod? The problem I am running into when I shop online for Pfluger reels is allot of places do not list the model number like 6930.
PmBPosts: 527December 31, 2017 at 4:39 pm #1740034You’ll get a good value from the Shimano reels in the $30-80 range. Sienna, Sedona, Sahara.
Also, keep in mind that drag washers can upgraded on lower-end reels to get some of the most important benefits of the higher-end ones at a lower cost than purchasing the more expensive reels.
