Despite the warm weather, the low wind speeds have enabled areas of the St Louis River that were open a week ago, to freeze back up. Ice conditions are not great, but the fish are biting! Today, I saw anywhere from 3 to 9 inches of ice within a 50 yard area.
With this warm weather, we set up in a mere 6 feet of water. Now when this cold front comes in mid week, you can bet i will be a lot deeper, but today I opted for shallow water and it turned out to be a good idea. Managed quite a few nice fish between us, as they were very agressive this morning. I was working a gold and chartruse slender spoon that proved to be irresistible to three nice healthy fish.
As the winds gusted this morning, the Otter cabin stood rock solid! Just put the back to the wind and let er buck! There is no need to worry about framework bending the slightest bit as this stuff is tough! Temps were in the low 30’s, but that wind chill had er down in the 20’s and there was no need for a heater what so ever. I can say I am truely in love with the insulated fabric. Back on the ice tomorrow for some more action!
