Studded Bike Tires?

I’m thinking of getting studded bike tires for my mountain bike to use when ice fishing.
If you have ever tried this, please respond to these questions:
    1. How well do they work on glare ice? (especially when pulling the sled)
    2. What is the maximum depth of snow in which they are still useful?
    3. Any advice on which one to purchase?

    Thanks!

I’ve never studded a bike tire, but in high school I made a set on chains for mine. I just bought a small diameter chain and made it like most atv chains.

You’ll fall on your azz….. we did one as kids, careful when taking off, if you go too fast, the tire will slide right from under you… OUCH !!! Once your going, it’s fine… just leave LOTS of room to get stopped… again… slowly. Oh yeah, you have to stud the front tire too

Someone I know does winter cycling.A decent tire is Kenda Klondike tires. They work decent overall, not so sure about pulling sleds. That would be something to try out,I guess.

I believe Ron Schara show Minnesota Bound had a progrom on riding bike in the snow in northern minnesota. I think they over size tires. 4 inchs wide and they were riding them on snowmoble trails. Maybe you can look back on some old shows and find it. I also believe the bike shop was in northern minesota or wisconsen. Good luck!

I have a buddy that used to race motorcycles on ice with studded tires. Tires were studded even on to the sidewll a little ways. He said you could lay the bike over in a corner just like you were on dirt.

I saw some studded tires at wally world 2 years ago, my plan was to find a granny 3 wheeled bicycle for early and late ice…or a year like this!

When we were kids we would ride are bikes into snow piles just so we would flip over the bars .

Seriously though I thought about just wrapping a small dog chain around mine and trying it. Once you get moving usually you’re ok but no ice here to check it out on.

I saw something like this on TV several years ago. People in Russia raced bikes with studs that looked like small ice picks on the tires that were about 2 inches long. I don’t think you want to go down and have the tire come any where close to you though.

    Rusian ice racing video…

I’ve got a set of 26″ nokian 294 extremes that have been barely used and I’d be willing to sell if you’re interested. They were the most aggressive studded 26″ tire until they came out with the 300’s

    Thanks for the info!

    Feb 1973:

Young adult put 250 Suzuki through ice and into the Crow River near Hutchinson.

    Don’t ask how I know.

PS pay attention to outside bends in the river.

I think I’ll stay off the rivers, at least this year.

I race dirtbikes on the ice with studded tires and glare ice with no snow is the best. The studs I use are called Gold Screws and are installed with a cordless drill. The only problem I can see is that the nobbs on the tire might be too short. The smallest size Gold screw is 7/16″LG. But if you can find pre-made studded tires that would be the way to go. As far as snow 2-3″ and thats it unless you have hard pack.

Well, I got a chance to try out the new studded tires and it worked better than expected. I didn’t slip once nor did I feel like I was in danger of slipping. I went with a buddy in the morning and I was able to go explore new locations, then when I found the fish, I called him over.
In the afternoon, I took the kids out. They loved it! “Faster Daddy!” They don’t last long on the ice, but I was able to put 2 of them on their 1st ice gills!
