This year’s bite – when will it slow-up?

I’ve always been one in the past to attribute the slowing of the bite, the doldrums of Jan., the midwinter-blues, etc. to more large vehicle traffic on our favorite lakes. With trucks not being on many lakes in MN, little snow in many areas and good green weeds to show for it; will the bite slow? What are people seeing out there?

Been wondering that myself. With the lack of ice and no snow on it oxygen levels should be good I would think. What will this do to the March bite? Many of the perch I’ve caught are full of eggs. Early spawn too?

Best ice season for me ever I believe.

If it slows, it was a fun ride.

Seems for me traffic where i have been fishing is about normal.

I was thinking with this cold snap that this was going to be it for the walleyes, but with the warm-up already coming before the end of the week, I am a bit more optimistic of it holding on…

    Explaining the Unexplainable…..

Mississippi River levels are lower than they have been in the past couple years. Double edge sword of sorts with thin & limited ice coverage to date. Can’t wonder off too far from the beaten trail but with so much open water ~ oxygen levels remain high. Probable the ut-most important factor in my opinion.

What changes I have noticed since Dec 10th is the bite window & profile selection. 1st ice (Dec 10th ~ Dec 23rd) ~ could pretty much drop anything down the hole at any time of day and trigger strikes. Last week the early AM bite started to tapper off at about 9 o’clock. Smaller spurts throughout the mid morning & early afternoon hours before picking back up again in the late afternoon. Also had to start changing profiles every 5th or 6th drop to keep some activity on the flasher screen & draw some interest during those not so aggressive hours.

Lots of open water, not one day on the ice yet this year
