I have had off of work and been hitting it hard. Made a new friend – IceNutz from here in Eau Claire and bought some tip downs from him. Never used tip downs until now. Man I have been missing out. Some days the tip down bite is great others a jig bite. Then a combo of each. I have been hitting Lake Eau Claire targeting cribs off the main channel. I have found fish on the crib, the flat next to the crib and in the channel depending on the day. Mostly been hitting fish in the morning. Backwater bite or “Rookery” has been D-E-A-D for me. Tip up bite also has been non exsistent. My brother and nephew enjoyed a great day on the water Wednesday along with IceNutz aka Charlie. The brats were great! This morning had a great bite 7-10 then it dies. I am catching all species of nice pans depending on the day, it will be gils, crappie or perch or a nice mixture of all.

This reminds me I need to get some tip downs. I haven’t fished with them since I was first exposed to them fishing with Tanner but there’s a couple lakes I fish were the tip downs would be ideal.

Thanks for sharing your findings from the last 10 days with us.

Looks like a great time. I don’t know if we’ll ever get safe ice here, 48 and open water or just a skim of ice.

Sounds like a lot of fun. I’ve been meaning to pick up a tip-down for awhile now and keep forgeting to do it. Thanks for the reminder! Are you primarily using a plain hook/minnow on the tip-down?

A #14 treble, mono leader and a small split shot. I prefer red hooks but Cabelas did not have any in stock. Fished 1-2′ off the bottom. Been picking up a few walleye and pike with this rig. The weather we’ve been having has really been great for the tip downs. Charlie makes a nice tip down for $20. Oak frame / rigged rod.

Holy smokes! Did you land that bass on a tip down? That would be quite the fight on a fixed amount of line and no drag.

Bill (BigPike) I had a blast fishing with you, AL and Chris, how many fish did we end up with on Wednesday? I’ve got a tip on a couple hot lakes that we need to hit for some Crappies.

I went out yesterday AM and could only manage to 14.5″ Walleys on the tip downs, sure was fun but would of been better if they were 1/2″ longer!!

Thanks for the compliment on the Tip Downs! They do produce well when the Crappies and Perch are finiky.

Hope we can get together a few more times this winter. That Smallie had to be one heck of a battle on a tip down.

I loved the Northern that took the Tip Down pole down the hole and we caught it on another Tip Down before we realized that the other Tip Down was down the hole. Glad we had the safety string tied to the frame!!!

Thanks Charlie, you picked a good day to take off, and actually the bite was a little off for the day but still good!

Most impressive. I am glad scrolled back up to get the whole story. At first glance I thought the scale in the photo was just a thermometer reading 47 degrees . . . great fish!

    Paul,

Ice is good for wheeler every where we have been. We should get an Eau Claire GTG one of these weekends. I will keep in touch and should have your Tip Downs ready mid next week as soon as the poles get here. I got a few tips on some hot lakes to the north.

Maybe a trip north? I have a good tip on a Lake that is doing well on Crappies and Perch, it’s a 100 mile drive and we would have to leave early. If we split gas costs it wouldn’t be bad. Have to watch the weather might be windy.

Also good reports in the back waters near Alma?

I am up for anything. Actually got a very legit tip on a very local lake that we could also hit….
