I received a new tip up from my Secert Santa here at work – Nice since a _hole ran over one of mine last year and did not stop. My ?’s are: What line is the best to use on it. My old ones had a Rubber coated Type called Tip up line – Works Ok but rather hard to ties Knots to a swivel. I’ve tried braided line but did not like that it held so much water and tended to freeze hard on the spool on cold days while resetting a line or if left out in the truck after use. Is there anything else anyone has found to work well. My other ? is what do all of you use as a depth marker to not have to reset the depth after each fish. I’ve tried Bobber stops but they tend to slide to much over time. I’ve used a small split shot but they can weaken the line and tend to fall off rather easy. My friend has all of his set up with a small Button and that seems to work Ok other than it it makes wrapping up a little hassle. Anyone else found anything that has worked well for them? Thanks in advance for all the responses and idea’s.

All I have ever used is braid Tip up line, you need to bring your tip ups in and dry them out after using them.

I always used very small set bobber to mark depth, just wrap the line around them several times so they do not slip.

I usually use a splitshot to mark depth and 65lb power pro. As far as the line freezing, as soon as you drop the spool back in the water, it thaws out pretty quickly.

    Good Luck!

I use braided line and bring my tipups inside when not using them. If you don’t they will freeze up. I also use a split shot to mark my depth. You have to have a few extras because the occasionally fall off. Can’t say they have ever weakened my braided line though. I can wind up all the line using a split shot but those little bobbers won’t fit through the line guide. Not sure whether a little button will fit through the line guide.

Same here. I use dacron line for all my tip ups. Using the no-stretch braid will result in some nice cuts on your hands if the fish decides to run while you have the line in your hand.

I also use the small bobbers. They’re about the size of an M & M and you can get them at most places that sell ice fishing equipment.

I use white dacron tip up line. also i would recommend putting an old button your main tip up line to mark the depth instead of those little bobbers. the button stays in place and you can wined it back on to your tip up spool at the end of the day.

Okay, call me an idiot, but I need some explanation on the whole button as a marker thing. I have always used the small bobbers and wrapped the line around two or three times. Can somebody explain or post a picture of the button. Thanks.

Just thread the line in one whole and out the other so that the button is afixed to the line. A small button with small holes certainly works best. Then, one can just slide the button up or down accordingly.
