Big Ol’ Bluegills

It’s been awhile so I thought I would post an up to date report. It’s been a great start of the season with many big bluegills for us with quite a few going over 10″es. We’ve been fishing the main basin of a lake that kicked out some giants this fall, mainly in the 18′ to 23′ range. With the deeper water tungsten jigs have been the go too, either tipped with plastics or meat. We’ve really had to work these fish hard and drilled hundreds of holes to stay on the small pods of fish, but it’s paid off in a big way. A great start for 2011-2012 for sure.

Well done Trav. Looks like that fast auger drilling all those holes really paid off.

That is a huge bull, make no mistake about that, but that photo composition makes it look about 18″!

I’d love to try and replicate that pose. But first I need to find some 10″+ gills. Doubt an 8″ would turn out looking like that.

Little Atom plastics were being used. Also, EVERY one of those fish pictured but one was released, which is going to the taxidermist.

How many licks does it take to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop?

The one that will be completely void of fish next week if it had been answered. Great fish Trav! Makes the 8-9 inchers I was catching this weekend look like potato chips!

Its great to see a lake here in MN still producing those sumo gills.
Looks like the ice was in good shape, how much did you find? Did you walk on or take a Wheeler?

We walked on, but there was wheeler traffic out there. There was a solid 6-8 inches

Wow! That would be an incredible feeling, pulling in one of those monsters. Fun!
