superline vs. mono

Just curious how many of you use mono vs. a braid for jigging walleyes? I have run 4 pound fireline for the last 5 or 6 years and love it. I tend to use a softer rod to take into account the lack of stretch in the line but I like it because it doesn’t break (ever). I really can’t say I have had the hooks tear out of fish, and don’t often have any come unbuttoned. I spend most of my time fishing in my 1 man portable, but I do like the fact that mono doesn’t freeze up like fireline when hole hopping. So what do you guys like?

To be a “compleat” river angler one needs to use both, depending on the presentation and conditions.

We’re talking ice fishing here right?

I’ll use a hard line for jigging spoons and jigging raps. P-line or mono for everything else.

I don’t like Fireline for ice fishing. Seems to hold a lot of air bubbles that show up like interference on my locator.

I use Fireline Crystal and Nanofil on my walleye rod and my light action rods for crappie/perch. I also attach 18 inches of mono of the same pound test (4 or 6 lb) using a uni to uni knot if I think the fish are extra finicky.

Our ice fishing group are big Fire Line advocates for the jigging line. Not one report of a broken line. My brother-in-law landed a 55″ tail hooked sturgeon on 4 lb Fire Line. Some are using it on the set line also. I still like mono there.

It gets worse as the line ages, plus holds more water(guide freezing).I do like using the smoke color, and I reverse it often to minimize those problems.Like when the “frizzies”start.

I wonder what hard line resists freezing-up the best?

I use Fireline Crystal a lot, but hole hopping I prefer a monofiliament line. Only when the temps are 20F or colder will I switch back to Fireline for hole hopping. By then any water will freeze up the moment it touches your tip line guide, and Fireline will cut through that ice up line guides better. I like flourocarbon lines for their additional sink assist for light lures, but have to pay attention to line jumping off the spinning reel spool.
