Lake of the Woods Quick Report

Joel and I are up fishing on Lake of the Woods and I thought it a good idea to throw out an update on conditions and the bite.

Ice conditions are behind normal for this time of the season but people are getting out on ATVs. There’s 8″ – 10″ of ice near shore and the resorts are doing a good job getting people out to fish in depths out to 25′. There are still large areas of open water in the basin so cross country travel, particular north to the islands, is strongly discouraged.

The word at the resorts is that fishing is good for numbers and most everyone is catching fish. 17′ – 21′ seems to be a common depth being fished and the catch is a mix of walleyes, saugers and the occasional big perch.

Joel and I opted to get away from the houses and road traffic and stick to shallow water to see if we couldn’t get on a better class of fish. It paid off. Our first three fish went 23.5″, 27″ and Joel had a giant come unpinned right at the hole after the fight was all but over and all the was left was to get the head of the fish up the hole. AAArrrrrRRRRGggGGGGG! How that fish slipped the hooks will haunt us both for awhile as it was the largest walleye I’ve seen below the ice in several years.

After our run on bigger fish we moved out a couple feet deeper and we quickly iced a half dozen nice eaters for dinner at Adrians. We catch ’em, they cook ’em which is a great way to wind down from a long, wet day out on the lake.

The hot bait for us was the 1/4 Oz. BFishN Tackle blade bait. Joel did big fish damage fishing gold and I had better numbers on pink white.

As for the pic attached, Joel looks shocked that this fish stayed hooked up. I know if we had lost this second big fish we would have had to head to shore for the rest of the day.

We’re back at it tomorrow. To everyone else headed out on ice this weekend, be safe out there. Ice conditions have been changing rapidly everywhere we’ve been.

Sounds good guys Good luck and isn’t it fun, with early ice and seeing a GIANT through it…

Did you get the “Ice quake” yesterday afternoon? West of Pine Island we got quite a thrill. I had water sloshing up out of the holes onto my floor.

So close.. yet so far away. The fish was completely spent and laying on its side tight to the ice one second, the next it was swimming away, slowly.

We didn’t fish yesterday but did overhear several groups talking about it. Must have been quite the boomer.

Heard some great stories about it from some of the guides. Sounded fun! Reminded me of taking some buddies who’d never been on ice to do some fishing on Mille Lacs. We’d pre-arranged for everyone else to dive out of the house at the first thunderous crack, crawling towards shore on or hands and knees while screaming. Freaked them out pretty good.

That ice is definitely moving around out there with the warmer weather. Pay heed to the nice folks up here! They know what they’re talking about. A recent flight over the lake revealed about a dozen open water spots. When I asked, I said, “You mean stacked, iffy ice?” The guy who went up in the plane said, “No I mean like waves.” Yikes.

Still bummed over that big fish. Got one look at it, from there I focused on the rod tip and keeping firm pressure. James did the looking, and said it dwarfed that 27″er in the pics. Naturally. First run past the hole I could see most of the bait outside its mouth, but we had her licked! So close yet so far. Fun nonetheless. If you’re headed up, be safe and take your time.

James, I’m coming up to LOTW in a couple weeks, from southern MN. Just a quick question since I’ve only ice fished LOTW once before with so-so luck. Any advice on a moderately priced rod/reel combo for LOTW walleye? As well as…what lb test do you suggest for that? Thanks.

If you want a good combo to use for those eyes look at a Genz combo from clam. Otherwise Frabill makes a good one that will work too.

I hope this helps.. look at a Medium action rod as well.
