Are these same as dogfish that we have in the Mississippi? They sure look a lot alike.

Nope totally different. Dogfish AKA Bowfin have scales.

Pout, lawyers, ling, LOTA LOTA (Latin Name) have skin and a single barb on their chin.

It is a shame people throw them on the ice just to be wasted. Many of us enjoy catching fish. Pout fight great and are a blast to catch.

When they are as big as the one Tuck is holding I say grab anything you can. The biggest we’ve landed is 38.5 inches. Don’t kid yourself these fish will fight you for everthing your worth!! The 38.5 filled the hole and there wasn’t much room for my hand. I say when it is a big fish you simply make sure it doesn’t come unbuttoned. As Tuck would instruct……..”YOU NEED TO GRAB THAT!!” SO…. Grab everything and sacrifice anything!!No need to worry about teeth or cuts. Biggest we’ve landed was 38.5 inches. Looked like some sort of sea monster. Ugly as sin and tastey as a lesser grade of Lobster.

Funny you mention that Brian. Last week while the S&D team was up we talked about having a Daze “Pout Fest”. Group of guys staying at a local resort and targeting POUT at night. I’d put together a main cook shack and boil up the beast. Small prizes to be handed out. Wouldn’t be the Walker festival, but a bit more personal. Probably limit it to 30 guys. February timeframe.

Will there be people around? I mean in case I catch one of those scaly things….or do we just cut the line?

BK. I’m envisioning a similiar atmosphere as your Sturgeon Excursion. Except at night. If there is interest in this let me know as I will be in contact with a local resort to help package the deal.

I try to lip them if I can (gloves on). Grabbing them behind the head typically results in getting a tail wrapped around your arm. And if anybody hasn’t mentioned it yet, they probably have the most amount of slime of any fish that I’ve ever caught…pike are, well..pikers, in comparison. Letting them roll around in the snow for at least 30 minutes or so does help but they’re still slippery when cleaning. Regarding cooking, I typically chunk the loins and bake them on a cookie sheet with a little bit of butter and sliced onions on top before dipping in garlic and salt flavored butter. I will fry the thinner tail meat if I have a bunch. BTW, they do hold up very well in chowder if that’s your thing. Best tasting freshwater fish out there in my opinion.

FWIW – Chunking the loins and tail and simply breading/frying like a walleye makes for some excellent table fare as well. Once they get over 5lbs, I won’t throw one back!

I could not hazard a guess at that. Never measured one.

They have an interesting biology too and behaviors. I saw a ice fishing show on them last year I believe.
