I usually just grab them behind the head.

Then depending on size they get the back-straps taken out of them, boiled in water/milk, dipped in butter and of course consumed asap.

Never tried to lip one if that was the question!

It really depends! If it’s my nice Lodge shack, and the thing is as big as the lockness monster, then I’m pretty hesitant about letting it’s ugly nose (or tail, which ever beats the other to the surface 1st) much past that point. I’ve made the mistake of letting them “Get away from me” and what a frickin’ mess.
Have to admit, I’ll sacrafice a jig if I feel it needs to be Done!!!
Smaller ones, long needle nose in it’s mouth and quick get jig and back down hole the thing goes. Next few hours I find myself looking at a discusting hole.

Gill plate grab works for me. Tanker pouts are a fun catch. If you are suffering an internet lag, please be patient as the server handles the internet traffic regarding my jersey.

The classice belly lift, then followed with the typical foot hockey to keep them from getting back down the hole.

Landing is easy. What I want to know is where to catch them. Used to catch the heck out of them on Mille lacs but you dont seem to hear as many being caught now. Best eating fish under the ice.

Lake Bemidji has a good share. The snow-pout picture above is an example. The other is LOTW. I wish I had a better picture of the first. Its waistline was was trying to match its length!

I agree, Mike. I used to drive to ML just to cruise the shacks and pick up pout. Would get 30-40, then have a “Pout Fry” party for the city folks on a Fri nite. We usually lasted until 4pm on Sunday…

I lip them just like a bass if I can otherwise its any way I can. We get 2-3 a day at Lake of the Woods and keep any of them over 5 lbs. The smaller ones just aren’t worth it in my opinion. I prefer them boiled in water and dipped in butter more than any other recipe.

I have read that boiling them in 7-up is the way to go. Have you tried that??? Any good?

    how do you clean them??

we used to Vcut the back loin, flip it, then slide knife between the filet and the skin…

we left the ribs on the carcass.

just remember, if you are not going to keep them, put them back down the hole. it is wanton waste to just jeave them on the ice. one of the main reasons why people don’t catch as many anymore is most people leave them laying on the ice.

Just like a cat fish you do not want to cut into the stomach. That big fat stomach on them is full of some nasty smelling stuff.

I tried 7up and didn’t like it. Another recipe I use is one I originally had for Halibut and it involves putting in some brown sugar. Cook the fish until it comes to the surface and its done.

I usually just take the back straps, but on larger fish I cut out the tail meat too. Just make sure to cut out the darker strip down the middle as it is not the greatest tasting.

When we head out in portables, I bring a bucket for fish but I also bring some plastic grocery bags to throw pout in before tossing them in the bucket. It helps control the slime. I never let them freeze though.

This is how we did it this spring in Canada !!!!!!! I never thought I would eat one either. Gotta say boiled and dipped in garlic butter — they are pretty darn good

We just fried them like cat fish or walleyes. Very hot oil or they get mushy like a cat.

Hi Broncosguy, this is Tucker. Last year I managed to get a 36 inch pig pout out of the depths of Rainy Lake. One heck of a fight she had! My advice to you is because they are very slimy to grab them in the gill plate but try asking Chris Granrud he will know more

    Wow, what a Tank Tuck

I always grab just behind the head/gills and then lip them with a glove once they’re out of the hole, but I don’t remember catching a single pout last year on Mille Lacs… Used to be common, but like others have said they’re aren’t nearly as many anymore.

If you do catch one and decide to clean it the best way is to let them freeze, cut the skin all the way around just behind the gills and then just peal them using one plyers to hold him by the lip and a second one to pull the skin back

Are these same as dogfish that we have in the Mississippi? They sure look a lot alike.

    How to land a pout……daaaa

If it’s a monster you stick your head right into the hole and bite down on it’s lower lip with authority, show that dang thing who’s boss and flip him out of the hole while shacking your head with a vengeance. For crying out loud it is only a fish

I have had to tell guys that in my boat more than once when catching dog fish, the occasional eel, and gars

Put the glove on and hope it not to big to wrap itself around your arm.
