I would like to start a discussion on what makes one pop up better than the other. Who thinks what is better? The eskimo fatfish 949i or the clam summit thermal?

I’m a lifelong clam fishermen but that new Fatfish does look nice. I fished out of a few of the hub style houses last year. Not overall a big fan of them. The slick floor (when warm and on bare ice)and the flaps freezing to the ice were just 2 of the problems I saw with them.

I am also considering a HUB style house.

FISHThumper, aren’t the floors slick in a flip – over style as well as flaps freezing to ice??

My biggest question is how easy to they anchor to teh ice so they don’t blow away??

also, how easy do they fold up into the bag?

I just bought a Clam Expedition (hub type), which is similar but haven’t had it out on the ice yet. I can tell you it packs up nicely in the bag, only weighs about 25 lbs. I can also tell you it takes longer than 60 seconds to put it up the first few times. I’ll let you know my experiences on the ice for anchoring, curious myself to see how well the screw anchors work.

I’ve never owned one of the new insulated hubs but have used a Eskimo quickfish for the past 4 years and really like it. I have never had any issues with a slick floor but then I don’t use a lot of heat either. I have never had issues with the flaps freezing either. I have had one of my hubs pull through the fabric but that was fixed (handyman special) and it’s held up two seasons.

I just bought a Fatfish 949 (non-insulated) but have not set it up yet. I like the fact I don’t need a pick up or a trailer to haul my hubs around and the old one was very easy to set up and take down and Eskimo did a great job with the bag it goes into – not like the tents that take an engineering degree to get back into the pack bags.

Never had a problem with the floors being slick or the flaps freezing to the ice in the flip style – It was like a ice rink in the hub style I fished in last year. The flaps may have frozen down because the guy I fished with banked them in with slush. I think they would work good in a situation where you wanted to setup and stay in one place for a fair amount of time – Just does not fit my fishing style.
