What size reel?

    I am trying to choose a reel for fishing eyes through the ice. I am mostly trying to decide between a 500 or 1000 size Sedona or Sahara. The reel will be going on a 32″ Perch sweet heart. My concerns about the smaller reels are the line capacities. For some reason I just don’t think 60 yards of 6lb test is enough.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    FDR

    6lb test seems heavy for perch

    60yds = 180 feet

    How deep are U fishing?

    the 1000 could also be used in the open water times

    It will be primarily used for eyes. I like the idea of being able to the reel for the open water season too.

    If you are talking double duty (ice/soft water) and walleye. The 1000 is a good choice. Even at that, I’ve never seen a walleye make a 200′ screaming run. I personally like the 2500s just because of my large hands. I do run 500s and 1000s on my ice gear however.

    I have a 1000 shimano on 36″ outside perch sweet heart rod and love it I’ve had good luck with the sedonas but for a little for money the sahara or symetre more ball bearings and smoother all comes down to how much you wanna spend I’ve got a stradic and a symetre that are 12 + years old fished hard and still going strong

    I had the same dilemma as you. I chose to go with the 1000’s for 2 reasons. Number one, because I ice fish out on lake superior also and we fish in 200 fow. Secondly as stated above, open water use. The 750’s are ideal but tough to find. I put the 1000’s on a 32 inch walleye sweetheart and a 34 inch perch sweetheart and they don’t feel too heavy or excessively bulky to me. Good choice with the Shimano’s tho! You will not be disappointed!

    I honestly wish they made a 1500 or 1750 size reel. I would love to have that size reel on my open water stuff. The 2500s have way more line capacity than I need and the 1000s are just to small in my hand (and look silly on a 7′ rod).

    I personally like the smaller ones, but then get a better real with a good drag.

    I am using Stradic 1000s with great results.I fish below the dams with these and never had line capacity issues.That is with 6# Vanish or same # Fireline.
    If you buy new,see Brett’s post on saucing them

    FDR,
    I have used my 1000 Sahara on my open water and hard water rods without any trouble. I was a little concerned initially about the reel being too heavy for my ice rod but that has proved to not be a problem.
