when you are fishing. normally have a bucket full of snow to put the keepers in so they do not freeze solid and easy cleaning when we get home.

    what do you do?

what do you do when there is no snow?

I know not everyone keeps fish, but from time to time my family definately likes a fish fry especailly the “perch” chips.

    thanks

I use a couple plastic bags and keep them in the bottom of my sled or bucket.

I throw them in a couple inches of water in the bottom of a small pale to keep them from freezing. It also keeps them from drying up and if I feel like scaling the scales remove much easier when keeping the fish wet through out the day.

if you are worried about no snow, auger a few holes and make some. Snow in bucket is about the best way to accomplish the no freezing method.

I fill my bucket 1/2 full of water to keep them in while fishing to prevent freezing. Dump the water when it is time to go home. Then fresh fish for dinner! BTW, good luck this weekend in our fantasy League!! JC

I use a cleaned out water softener salt bag. Pretty heavy duty and usually don’t have problems with freezing.

Am I the only one that prefers to clean fish that are already half frozen?

I’m not talking about solid as a rock fishcicles that you could use to commit a bank robbery with, but firm enough that they’re not slimy and the meat is solid when you cut them open.

I usually toss them on the ice to “flash freeze” them then stick them in a bucket with snow or just a bucket in the portable.

I also slit the throats right away on any fish I am keeping and let them bleed out. It makes cleaning them much less messy and the fillets have very little to no blood on them, just a quick rinse and you’re done.
