I had a friend of mine call last night who is having a problem with his LX5. From what he says is when he turns the unit on and if he moves it at all it cuts in and out and it makes a very loud squeeling noise, Than runs fine if it is not bumped around, makes it tuff for hole hopping. I ahve never had this problem with any of my units ever, it is 2 years old and has been well kept and not in my hands.
Cutting in and out my guess would be a short some where?? as for the long squeel??? Im lost. Is it a quick fix or is it something that should be sent in? If it was mine I would have sent it in as I told him also. Whats your take on the problem? Thanks

Actually, something very similar. I talked to Marcum about that and it is how the wiping action of the rings actually works. What they said happens is that you will get dust and dirt built up on these wiping leads which causes the screen to stop working. Try to tip the whole unit upside down while it is running to allow this to clear out. Hold it there for a few seconds and then tip upright again.

See if that helps. It did work for my issues like that.

Yeah, I’m not sure on the noise either. But if he can isolate the short… noise will be gone, right. I’m sure you’ve already made these suggestions but I’d check all battery connect, at the battery and at the back of the unit. If that doesn’t do it… time to send it in for a quick fix.

Sounds more like the brushes, I’m sure the Marcum is similar to a Vex and has the spinning brushes inside the unit. It just might need to have the brushes cleaned or it could be a bigger problem like a loose brush.

Problem solved, had to make a call to Marcum and they were on it and put a pin on it quick. Wire problems and turns out my friend is not so easy on his gear and had it in a sled across 8 miles of pack ice his last trip. And had in packed away for the summer. Bad time to find out your gear needed to be fixed we are going to be on the ice this weekend.

A guy never wants to have problems with his gear, but when the problems do arise you want to have confidence that it will get fixed quickly and properly. Marcum has always been great at getting an angler back to the action in a timely fashion.
Hopefully your buddy can borrow a unit from someone this weekend.
