Got $75 to burn at TB and was looking at this rod with a Tica for crappies early season. Any good or bad? I think it sould be a good rod with this set up.

Personally I’d opt for a longer rod if available in that model. Of course that’s personal preference and might not work for you if you fish in a small one man shack. I do however feel I have more control and fish more comfortably with the longer stick. I’d opt for a 28″ – 32″ blank if I was doing the shopping as that would offer a good compromise between inside / outside use.

If the Meat Stick isn’t available in the longer lengths look at the Thorne Powernoodle as a comparison to see what you prefer. They’ll have those available for side-by-side comparison when you’re at the shop and both rods are designed for a similar purpose.

I got the 27″ meatstick when it first came out. Didn’t truly like it for crappie fishing, but everybody is different. Nice flexible tip, but rather dull on sensitivity for feel.

Ive got a whole Lineup of JM rods. Meat stick is by far my favorite rod. I use the 24s, but agree that if you can get by with the 28, Id prefer the longer blank. I use a Tica reel as well. There may be better equipment out there, but at the price point, I dont think you could get a much better set up.

I do have a St. Croix 6’6″ Jigging rod I use for summer that might work…..

The rods I use now are 24″ and I have one 26″. I fish out of a Otter Cabin and set one rod on top a minnow bucket or Marcum and jig with the other, so a longer rod might be to long.

Some info: I am looking to replace a cheap combo I have been using for years, it works but I think I spent $15 on it. I use it for crappies with a light float or small jig to get them light biters. I was thinking the light tip would help see – bites as well as replace a spring bobber. Maybe just a 24 UL would be good also.

I have the 24 and i believe the 26 inch meat sticks and i love’em. nice soft tip but goes right to the back bone so you can fight non targeted fish. i have caught some good size northern on them and landed them with ease.

If you’ve got $75 to spend. IMO is go find yourself and extra $10-15 bucks and get the TB powernoodle and maybe spend a little less on a reel like a ul pflueger trion or something. I have the 28″ JM meatstick and it’s a decent rod but I’ve tried a buddies powernoodle and as far as Thorne rods go nobody comes close. I have one on my x-mas list to the fw and if anybody from Thorne bros see’s her in there sell her a Walleye sweetheart too please. Just my .02

Meat sticks for me are a no go, You have to watch the tip like a hawk, I have broken every last one I have owned, Im not easy on my gear, Just had a string of bad luck with them, some of my fishing partners swear by them, I’ll stick my money in a good custom rod.

The meat stick and powernoodle are not meant to “feel” the bite. They are a visual indicator like a spring bobber.

Plus 2 on that idea, bought 2 meatsticks only one made it back
from the FIRST trip. I even made plastic tubes to protect the
    tips.
