I have used gulp alive all summer with great success and am going to continue using it on ice for pannies this winter for sure. My question is….has anyone had successe using it on a tip up. I am skeptical of that use because of the lack of action the bait would have. Just curious with the high prices for some of the larger minnows now days.

I’ve never ice fished with it, but have had some great success with it some days. I would try it alone and/or tip minnows/jigs with it. I use it all kinds of ways, even tipping cranks with it. Interested to see if it works ice fishing…I would have to guess it would in some circumstances.

The Gulp Alive in winter works well for the panish, but those baits are in motion. While the scent may draw fish in the winter, you may find that hits come if the bait is showing some motion, maybe just idle, but I’d bank on motion. One never knows until he tries it. I might suggest changing the bait often to keep the scent real hot and when doing so just put the bait coming off the hook back into the juice to refresh it.

I use the 1” minnows for panfish like Tom and the stuff works great. I take it you are talking about the bigger minnows.

I have had great success fishing dead smelt under tip ups before but I’m not sure about the gulp alive. Not saying it isn’t worth a shot. I do agree that if you go that route make sure to keep fresh stuff on the hook. Once it loses it’s sent I would have no faith in it.
Maybe the help with a little motion such as this style tip up might help.

I agree with Bret….. it might just work…
We used to use smelt under tip-ups also….no motion there either…and did well.
The scent itself may be enough of a trigger.

Go to a craft store and buy a bag of mixed-color pom-pom balls about 1/2 inch diameter. Use a carpet needle to thread one on the line before you tie on the hook. Once the hook is tied on slide that pom-pom down to the knot and give it a shot of the Gulp juice. The pom-pom will hold the scent for a long time and also adds some color to the rig, similar to what a flasher blade offers.

I have also used the 1″ Gulp Alive Minnows for Panfish with good result, the big Gills love them and they hold up well to numerous fish.
