Ice Cleats

With first ice approaching us in a hurry I thought maybe you guys would share what brand ice cleats you recommend. That first ice can be a real butt buster

Remember back in the day when the first Ice Cleats were a piece of flat metal with the corners bent down? After a few hours walking or standing on the ice a guy could swear from the pain in the arch of his foot he was a bird sitting on a wire all day.

My first upgrade from these and the ones I still use today are small tungsten inserts on a rubber slip over your boot style. At first glance the thought was these small little spikes were hardly going to keep me upright, but after using them I was amazed at the stability they provide. Not only that, sore arches were no longer an issue.

Since then there have been a number of different styles brought to the market. I was just wondering what you guys prefer for keeping upright, and your butt and back on your skull cap off the ice.

I myself am looking for something that might be a little easier getting on and off. I like the cleats I have but there are times it is a pain trying to get them on over my boots.

I have a pair that I love since here in Iowa I am WALKING when ever I fish. I believe that they are HT brand that slip over my boots. They work wonderful and I have even worn them over my work shoes on some of the days when we get hit by ice in town. I guess my only complaint is that they do NOT fit over my BIG ice fishing boots that I break out later in the season when there is lots of snow and very cold. Then again by that time there is usually enough snow that I don’t need them. Got mine at Fleet Farm and saw them there again yesterday.

Brett, I have a pair still in the box you can try out to see if you like them..

Remember a year or so back when we went out of Stoddard.. I struggled with the pair i was using at the time… then while at the St. Paul Ice Show I got to try out first hand the Kahtoola Micro Spikes… I was sold.. and I have had them on the ice for a couple of seasons now.. Some buddies of mine even swear by them for deer hunting when the hill sides are iced up and slippery..

Would anyone know if the Kahtoola micro spikes will fit over larger boots such as Mickey’s?

My boots are size 12 lacrosse ice kings, and I love my katoolas. They fit fine on my ice kings. Best cleats I’ve had.

When I got my Cabelas Predators my old cleats wouldn’t fit, size 13. I found Yax Trax Extremes and they are excellent.

X3 for these. As Matt Johnson has said from Thorne Bros you could run full speed make a 90 degree cut for a out route playing football on the ice and not fall

I’d love to see someone do that without pulling a hammy!

LOL…only problem is that one will fall since they aren’t used to making such a turn. Cuz I know from experience.

The only Yak Trax worth a darn on glare ice are the XTR Extreme which are similar in design to the Katoola Micro Spikes.

I bought the IceTrekker Diamonds in XL and should of gotten the Large for my size 11 boots. They still fit but could be a little tighter. I was skeptical at first but after seeing them they look like they will really grip. Hopefully we will have ice to try them on soon!!!!

You cannot go wrong with the Katoola, I also looked at these and they look like some mean spikes also.

That might be a little aggressive for ice fishing

My ATV seat would make it one trip before being ripped to shreds if I was wearing those things. Two trips tops.

The one’s I have not fancy ones, but they work, fit mine and my boots are 14.5. I do remember they were in a black and yellow package at Gander though.
