Your Favorite Ice Fishing Line?

I am sure this was a post in the past, but every year it seems like there are a dozen new types of ice fishing lines available. I was wondering what people use on their ice rigs, especially for panfish. Looking at brands, composition and reasons.

I will say I refuse to try Bionic, because my nephew goes to BSU and works there. He says the line is crap.

w/o a doubt, my favorite line in the winter is 1/4″ rope. Any heavier than that, it can cause the spear to fly crooked.

I use P-Line on most of my rods and fireline crystal on a few.

If we are talking panfish I especially like to use a high grade nylon type of invisible sewing thread. I learned about using this many moons ago from some elder Ice Fisherman who were out fishing everyone around them including me . Luckily for me it was my Uncle and Step-father. Since that day I have been using it too much succes .

I consider it a -1 in my IDO Karma score when someone does this in my thread, so I welcome it.

Very big fan of Pline for ice fishing, 5lb for walleyes and 2 or 3 lb for panfish, including perch.

Im going to go a bit out side the box with my post and say Northland Fluorosilk 1st and Berkley Vanish #2 for all my rigs. I have had no problems with the flurosilk and have fished it on these cold mornings and nights with no problem and it is very strong, I have invited many 5lb+ browns inside the boat with 3 and 4lb test so it is very hard for me to say its junk imo, maybe they sent the good spools to me Ill keep fishing them.

I like using Cajun Red Ice line. Typically 2-3 pound line for panfish for me.

I think he was talking about the mono Bionic. Which mine be fine too, I am just going off my nephews word. Then again, I wouldn’t say he is the most reliable source.

The great what line is the best debate

With all the lines that are on the market today, I still find myself going back to the dependable Trilene XL 2-4lb for panfish.

Last year I did spool on Suffix Elite Hi Vis 8lb on my walleye/pike rod and I have been liking it also.

The above lines I fish mostly on the backwaters of the Mississippi river but, the Trilene held up and has taken perch and walleyes on Mille Lacs too.

I have used mainly Pline in the past but trying Suffix Ice Magic this year in 3 lb. It seems to have good strength, very flexible, a little stretch, and thin.

I like p-line. Its on most of my rods but I also have liked the suffix ice in the neon orange, and Trilene ice as well.

I think I am going with Fluorocarbon for sure on the panfish rods. It just makes sense to me. No water absorption I would think would keep the line limp. Faster, albeit it probably negligible, due to density. Less visibility when the fish are skittish. And probably most important to me, stiffness for better hooksets.

Like I said, probably all of these things are negligible benefits compared to other lines, but good enough for me.

Sounds like P-Line is the most recommended brand too.

Just remember that Pline Flouroice isnt a 100 percent flourocarbon, Its a flourocarbon coated line. The New 100 Percent flouro trilene is what Im gonna spool up with this year. I just wish they made a High Vis Flouro…..

I’ve just been using 2 3 and 4 lb trilene ice for the last 9 or 10 yrs and it has been good to me for panfish, looks like hardly anyone uses it, guess I’m gonna have to try some p-line… Tried suffix ice 3 lb and while it does have excellent strength (seems stronger than any other 3 lb) it is hard feeling with lots of memory for me. After taking a great liking to seaguar invizx this last yr for open water I think I will buy some of their new abrazx ice in 2 lb.

All of the above reasons are the main reason I use 2# Berkley Vanish when pan fish are my target. Plus the abrasion resistance when considering the areas I fish. Timber, rocks, and the line others have broken off are just a few of the hazards in the areas I fish. The 2# allows me to feel the slightest bite but it also has the strength to pull a hook out of the timber when I need the strength. It is flexible enough to make the #14 & #16 gill pills with a spike look so alluring I can hardly keep gills, crappie and perch off of my line. And a #12 Diamond Jig sinks like a rock with the 2# line when the bite is hot.

    Flexible
    Abrasion resistance
    Low Stretch
    Low Visibility
I don’t specifically remember the diameter but diameter is something I always consider so I am sure it is in line with other such lines.
