What spinning reels do you guys like on the ice?

I know for Crappie and Bluegill drag probably isn’t at all important. For walleye it’s somewhat important. For Steelhead and Browns it’s extremely important.

I’m looking to re-rig my gear this fall. I’m curious what you are finding that you like and dislike in a spinning reel in the ice and cold.

Not so sure with the paper mouths crappies have drag isn’t that important.

Pfleuger President series or a Shimano mid to upper end reel would be my choice.

Tica Cetus SS500 is what I use but there is a Sienna 500 Spinning Reel that has a better drag for $29. The Abu Garcia Cardinal 100Ui Reel is good also.

    I prefer Shimano Sedonas.

The 500’s are perfect for panfish and have a wonderful drag for a reel that can be found for $50 if you do a little looking and they seem to be all but unfazed by extreme cold. I’ve not found a reel at this price range that is more durable.

    Shimano Sedona 500

The 750’s have been discontinued but you can still find them new online for $40 if you do some digging. The 750s are a great size for walleye.

If you plan to tackle with lakers, go for the 1000 for the extra spool capacity.

I’ve used Shimano Symetres for years, splurged on a CI4 last year at the Sports Show and don’t regret the cost.

I have Sedonas, Saharas and Symetres in sizes from 500 to 2000. The Sedona will provide you with a great reel for crappies and panfish on the smaller 500 or 750 right up to your walleyes using a slightly larger reel, 750 or 1000.

Lake trout and browns or pike….I recommend a baitcaster or a heavier spinning reel and one of higher quality, say the Sahara in the 2000. These big fish don’t fool around so the drag and gears have to be tolerant of what they can dish out.

The Presidents work great too. Ticas can have drag issues. Stay away from the Diawas and Quantums.

I’m a big fan of the Pflueger Presidents as well. I also took my Mitchell Avocet II off my ultra light and put it on one of my heavier walleye rods and it’s pretty slick. It’s a touch on the big side, but it’s as nice as you can get for $30.

Go check oout the new Pflueger 6925 or 6920 reel. Great reel for the money. This is a new reel out.

Shimano and only shimano for me. The sahara or symetre in a 500 or 1000 as they are both a great size for ice fishing. 500 for panfish and the 1000 for walleyes, trout, pout, etc. The 750 size is the best of both worlds when you can find it.

These reels are vital to my success out on the ice. The smoothness of the drag is second to none. From shallow walleyes tearing line out, to deep lake trout wearing out your forearm, these reels preform. period.
