Some of the best panfish anglers realize staying mobile and on the move can help you to remain on a roaming school. Watching a group of anglers move hole to hole with flasher in hand may seem like some sort of “Ice circus” to the novice fisherman content in holding down his 5 gallon pail.

Still you can always spot the fisherman that is in touch with his Marcum as he most often is the guy that will “Swirl” the transducer. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Well boy will this seemingly silly concept pay huge dividends for you this season. By rotating your transducer around the perimeter of the ice hole you will often times catch a short glimpse of a fish just outside your transducers cone. If an angler simply searches straight down you will rarely mark that fish that skirts the perimeter. By now detecting a fish just outside your circle of trust you can wait that fish out and gather a better understanding where that school of fish is located.

Give it a shot Kruger!! It is amazing the seemingly worthless information a guy can gather as he seems to have a Marcum attached to him at the hip from December through April. Stay tuned……I MIGHT have a few other tricks up my sleeve BTW don’t tell your friends if your in any sort of fishing competition. Just be the guy that always has the “Lucky Hole”. It’s much more fun that way.

Great tip Chris, I had no idea you cluld do that. I’m going to try it out as soon as we have some ice.

I PROMISE you it works. Look back to past fishing adventures while searching holes. Did you ever wonder why on a puck drop you seemed to mark a fish then as the ducer settles the fish is gone?? Ghost fish?? Aaaaaaah!! THIS WILL catch more fish for you. Keep it in the family boys.

Great tip Chris! I stumbled upon your “swirl” technique a few years back on accident and it works great in the waters I fish for crappies as many of the best spots have brushpiles that were planted by the state or other anglers. Works really good to find schools or the brush if you are off by a matter of feet or even yards and the brush shows up great on a flasher. Makes it a lot easier to drill right over the best spots in the brushpile (often the most dense snaggiest spot in the brushpile).

Right On!! This may seems trivial to some, but there is truly a higher level of understanding that the average ice angler who chooses to excel at the sport eventually comes to realize. I see it every single year on nearly every trip when sitting shoulder to shoulder with a fellow “Ice Heads” while we both stare down our flashers. It is very common to hear “I never knew that!!” “Wow is that Nice” “That is awesome”. Technology has changed our sport; Most all agree here. Still full knowledge of how to use this technology commmonly lags behind the industry advancements far beyond the Patented “Swirl” technique.
