If you had a choice and money wasn’t an issue which would you buy a Hummingbird ICE-55 or a Vexilar FL22?

Vex, no question. I hate hate hate hate LCD screens. Call me old fashioned, but I’ve never had the screen on my old FL 18 break or go bad. The other flashers with the LCD screens haven’t been around long enough to stand the test of time.

Besides, I love the hum of the wheel as it spins. I don’t know if the Birds or Marcums have that, but I know my Vex does and it’s hypnotic.

Sort of the old Ford vs Chevy question…. you’ll be best off looking at both, and deciding what you like, or what may work best with your intent.

    FL-18
22 is just too much stuff to not use. And From what I hear the flat read out does not show too well in the light. Nothing has been more solid than Vexilar over the years. On the market the longest. Thats just my opinion. -Mark

Ice 55 or new marcum lx7. I have a ice55 I got after I sold my fl12. Way better. The marcum lx7 is gonna be sweet also.

No contest IMHO. FL22, had the 18 & 8 and they were bullet proof as is the 22. FL@@ is much better to see in the sun light than the 18 or 8. IMHO

My FL20 was garbage in direct sunlight(the sun facing the flasher screen). I always had to hold my hand near the screen to shade it or turn my flasher around, putting the sun in my eyes.

Where the heck were you fishing? The surface of the sun?

Kidding aside, I really think that this is one of Vex’s best features. Besides the hypnotic humming .

I’ve only had trouble reading it when it is pointed directly at the sun. All I had to do is tilt the screen down slightly and could read it pretty well, not perfect, but good enough. I did find that it was actually more visible in the summer months on the bow of my boat in direct sunlight rather than on the ice. The glare from the snow and ice I’m sure play a huge part. Maybe even the low sun angle as well.

I own many models and use the Ice 55 almost all of the time. Yes, I have the vex, Marcum models and a few of each also.

I do believe one can do well with any of the mentioned units but I really enjoy using the Bird.

The FL20 is the Edsel of the Vexilar lineup. The 8, 18, and 22 are classics and I have no doubt I’ll pass my fully functional FL18 down to my son in 12-15 years or so.
