I was wondering if anybody had a recommendation about a good resort or guide for a weekend walleye trip this December or January. I will be with a group of family and friends numbering between 10 to 14 people. We are looking to go to Lake of the Woods or Rainy. We have done a few resorts on LOW the past few years with decent fishing but nothing to brag about. Just wondering what places have good reputations for catching fish.

I would definitely get ahold of Chris Granrud/RainyDaze Guide Service on Rainy Lake. We have fished and filmed with him on early ice and it can be an incredible bite! He knows the lake very well and with that many people you would really be able to dial in the bite too. Good Luck!

I would recommend Chris Granrud from this site and do a Rainy trip. He now has some permanent houses along with a fleet of Otter’s to accomadate bigger groups. That is usually big fish time on Rainy as well.

I would never want to take money from Chris’s pocket and would certainly endorse him for a different MN trip but…

if you want to visit WI, consider Door County, where Dale Strochein or Bret Alexander can put you on pounds of whitefish during the day and a pretty good walleye bite during the dawn/dusk bites. Dale runs the Sand Bay Beach Resort, so very nice lodging is also available!!!

If it were me,(which it’s not) I would give JP at the Wigwam on LOTW a call. Look back at his Ice Report Videos, that would give you some information.

Whatever you decide, have a great trip!!

Thanks for the kind words boys. If your looking for a good chance at some big walleyes and pike December and January can be pretty darn good. Can’t wait!!!! We have 4 additional small permanent houses along with our original fleet and Otter portables. This allows us to do our best to stay on the best bites. The small houses will likely be houses we sled to.

The above ideas are great, I still have Devils Lake on my list, hopefully getting it checked off this winter.

Thanks for all the great ideas. In the process of booking a rainy trip with Chris Granrud in early January and couldn’t be more pumped for it.
